Sync with Open Reader server - Other

Post by craab9 »

Mac OSX 10.8.4

Vienna 3.0.0 Beta 12 :400c0b3

I have installed the Fever Server (http://www.feedafever.com) in order to rid myself of the need to rely on outside feed servers. I am able to get to it from several other reeders that allow you to sync with open reader servers, most notably those that I use with iOS. When you added the ability to sync with other servers in this latest update I saw the opportunity to make this move and so will be working out the kinks from a users perspective.

In the Vienna preferences > Syncing, you prepend https:// automatically to the URL which a user chooses. While this might be appropriate for FeedHQ or BasQux, it is not appropriate for all feed reader servers and in my case it causes the sync to fail as https:// is not the same as http:// (obviously) and my server sits atop an http:// domain.

I would like to suggest that this decision be left to the preference of the user and have them manually put this as part of their URL when choosing 'Other' from the dropdown. When a user chooses either FeedHQ or BasQux (or any other pre-loaded server you might add in the future) you could make that as part of the automatic TextField fill when they make that choice from the dropdown.

Sorry, but this is deliberate and I don't intend to change it.

The Open Reader API implies use of the ClientLogin protocol, where the password is transmitted in clear to the server. Accepting simple http would represent a big security risk, and I won't take responsability for what might open.

SSL certificates are easy to get, and they are even free solutions like http://www.startssl.com
