Missing articles

Hello! I am new to Vienna and this is my first (and hopefully my last) bug report.
I will try to follow Mr. Johnson's tips for writing...

1. Versions.

Vienna Version 3.0.0 Beta 20 :0fb193d:
OSX Mavericks 10.9.1
I installed Vienna a few days ago for the first time and performed 1 update. So, no previous experience.

2. Bug Description.

Let's consider only 2 feeds: WOW and DocsPT.
My problem is similar to ars88's one:
http://forums.cocoaforge.com/viewtopic. ... es#p136558
The difference is that I am not sure whether the missing articles are time-related or not.
First of all, I must shut down my Mac when I am not using it. I am in Brazil right now and we are having 40 degrees on the shadows! >:o
Yesterday it seemed that Vienna was able to grab only the last 10 articles from WOW. Today, I got 25 articles in Vienna and 39 in Feedly. I considered the possibility of having caught the wrong feed from the site, so I deleted the feed from Vienna and grabbed it again. This time I got 10 articles only.
I did the same with DocsPT and when I grabbed the feed again I got 1 article that does NOT appear in Feedly.
There seem to be forces of the dark side behind my poor Vienna. Hopefully Mr. Johnson has some Jedi training...

3. URLs.

WOW: http://wowebook.net/feed/

DocsPT: http://www.docspt.com/index.php?type=rss;action=.xml

4. Settings.

I attach a picture of the Vienna preferences.

Thank you in advance.
Greetings.

First, when making comparison, make sure that filters are set the same way in Vienna and in FeedHQ (all articles or unread only ?)

Second, try using « Force Refresh Selected Subscriptions in Open Reader », then do as you usually do for a few days. Tell us if things do not improve after that.

Hi barijaona!
Thanks for your reply.

I am NOT using FeedHQ.
I made the comparison with my Feedly account, which, as far as I know, is not yet supported by Vienna.
My Feedly only shows unread articles when I open it every day, if that is what you mean by “filter”.
I suppose that « Force Refresh Selected Subscriptions in Open Reader » should appear under the Syncing tab in Preferences, but this is not my case… Please, correct me if I am doing wrong.

WOW blog:
The guy is a maniac, he posts about 50 articles per day (that’s what I get in Feedly), but Vienna is still showing 10 articles every day.

DocsPT blog:
Now I realize that I am also getting all the blog COMMENTS in Vienna, which DO NOT appear in Feedly. That’s really strange because, according to Safari, there is only 1 feed available for this site (unlike the WOW blog, whic has separate feeds for articles and comments). I am ussing FeedButton extension for Safari.

He posts 50 articles per day, but his RSS feed only contains the last 10 articles :-(
No wonder you cannot get all the articles !
Unless you are able to convince him to change his blog settings (in order to include more articles in the RSS feed), the only solution is to have an "always on" machine somewhere.
I suggest you open an Inoreader account (a free one should suffice) for tracking this kind of problematic feeds.

I cannot spot the « correct » feed either. You’ll probably have to contact the blog admin.

Dear Barijaona,

First of all, I must thank you for your help. Inoreader was indeed a great idea and it almost solved my problems. I took a while before answering you because I wanted to make sure to avoid stupid questions. Ok, let’s go to the results.

DocsPT blog:
I followed your advice, opened an Inoreader account and moved all of my feeds from Feedly to Inoreader. Now I am only getting the ARTICLES and no longer the COMMENTS for this particular feed. Problem solved. You should maybe consider the possibility of this being a Vienna bug instead of a blog-related issue, because the problem was solved by syncing to an open reader. Just an idea…

WOW blog:
Same as above. Inoreader was a blessing, I am now getting ALMOST all of the articles. But there is still a small and strange syncing problem related to this feed. Let’s try to split it up:

1) I open Vienna every 4-5 days and let the articles to accumulate, because I am feeling confident with the help of smart folders to clean up the mess. I open Inoreader in Safari as well in order to compare them and make sure the syncing is really taking place.
2) The maniac is posting more than 50 articles per day, indeed. Let’s say that I get 600 articles during this period.
3) First, I delete all of the unwanted articles at once by using a smart folder. They also disappear from Inoreader with no delay (marked as read).
4) Then I start reading and deleting the remaining articles in Vienna until the blue bubble disappears (the one showing the unread articles on the left-side bar). The syncing with Inoreader follows.
5) After deleting “everything” from Vienna, Inoreader still shows 1000 unread articles (the number seems to be stuck).
6) Then the blue bubble reappears showing the number 1000, but no article is displayed on the right-hand side.
7) After a short while, the number 1000 disappears and a smaller number shows up, let’s say 60, and again no article is displayed. This number also appears in the red bubble over Vienna’s icon. As this smaller number varies each time I open Vienna, I believe it is related to the unsynced articles from the “last period”.
8) I close Vienna and delete the Trash as suggested by the dialog box.
9) I reopen Vienna, the blue bubble shows 1000, I click on the name of the feed to display the content, and the blue bubble disappears.

Hope this will be of some help… and you won’t make a voodoo doll against me.
Greetings.

Hi Argentino,

DocsPT blog: are you sure the feed URLs you used are the same ? I could not subscribe through the URL you gave here.

WOW blog: can you clarify if you mark articles as read or delete them ?

Hi again!

DocsPT blog:
According to the FeedButton extension for Safari, which I use to get the subscription links, there is only 1 feed available for this blog. I used this link with Vienna before and now with Inoreader, with different results.

WOW blog:
I always DELETE the articles from Vienna, and these deleted items appear as MARKED AS READ in Inoreader. The “1000+” articles that Inoreader is showing now are the remaining ones. They never appeared in Vienna.

Both blogs:
No wonder you couldn’t subscribe to the feeds. Today, together with your answer in Vienna, I got 2 scaring red bars in Inoreader saying:

"There are issues with this feed. Please check it and resubscribe if necessary. More information."

In the attached images you can see that WOW is still showing unread articles in the background, while DocsPT shows nothing (meaning “everything is read”, because I deleted everything in Vienna).

Maybe I shouldn’t have given you the idea of the voodoo doll…

Greetings and good luck.

More news…

I subscribed to WOW again, both in Vienna and in Inoreader separately, to make sure they both get the same number of articles. They got both 20 articles, so I deleted the Vienna subscription (as you suggested in other message to other guy) and kept Inoreader’s via syncing.

After deleting the 20 items from Vienna, they were marked as read in Inoreader. A few seconds after that, another 6 new items appeared in Inoreader and I cannot manage to make them show up in Vienna. I tried both restarting Vienna and the “Refresh all your subscriptions” button many times.

Hi again Barijaona!

I believe I have found a clue…

When the number of items grows a lot you may loose track of what is actually happening. So I took a smaller ensemble to test the syncing and came to the following conclusion: the syncing only takes place with READ articles. If you DELETE an article in Vienna WITHOUT marking it as READ, then Inoreader continues to show it as UNREAD. Am I perhaps rediscovering the wheel?

As I told you before, I use Vienna’s Smart Folders to get rid of unwanted articles. And no, I am not a twisted-minded Argentinian. The reason for this particular use of Smart Folders is that I don’t know what new and interesting subjects the WOW guy is going to come up with next, but I already know what subjects I am no longer interested in. So I just go to the Smart Folder, select all with CMD + A and then delete everything.

Ok, the reason why I was lost is that there is NO BLUE DOT next to the Smart Folders, so I wasn’t aware of the number of unread articles I was deleting and therefore I wasn’t able to do a simple math calculation.

Finally, once deleted from Vienna, these unread articles in Inoreader no longer sync in future connections (maybe this is obvious to you) and accumulate forever. I don’t know whether this is a bug or not, I am just trying to help.

Any words from the Master will be highly appreciated.

Greetings.

Thanks Argentino.
I think you understood the cause of the issue.
For the time being, I have little time to look under the hood, but this surely needs a fix…
