Hello,
Vienna 3.8.3
macOS Monterey 12.6
MacBook Pro M2 chip
I have a subscription that suffers from this default since a long time ago : most pictures embedded in the article do not display (some do display).
The feed is https://www.lemonde.fr/rss/une.xml
Is there anything I can do to have all pictures displayed ?
Thanks in advance,
Regards,
Nuno Ferreira
Pictures don't display
Re: Pictures don't display
In the current RSS I can't spot any picture.
Vienna offers to download the image; it handles it as an attachment.
Looking into the RSS I see only links to the article. Since it is a newspaper, I assume they redesigned their RSS to maximize pageviews on their homepage.

Re: Pictures don't display
Thanks for the explanation. Looks plausible (they want me to read the article on their home page not on a RSS viewer). Strange though, some pictures, in some articles, still display on Vienna. They probably forgot to "hide" them.

Hello,
Following above exchange of posts I have contacted the newspaper who publishes the RSS feeds where the embedded pictures are not displayed by Vienna.
The newspaper declines any responsibility. For them the pictures should be displayed.
Then I tried the RSS Feed Reader extension of Google Chrome. This reader does display all the pictures embedded in the articles, including the ones Vienna is not able to read and display.
I think this proves Vienna is misbehaving. I am disappointed since I have been using this RSS Feed Reader for countless years now. Well, everything eventually comes to an end, true ?

Re: Pictures don't display
If it is any consolation, NetNewswire does not display the enclosed images in that feed either. I then tried with a Feed Reader extension for Firefox (Named FeedBro, the apparently most recommended one) and… it does not display the images either.
Vienna and the Firefox extension provide you a way to view the enclosed media (image).
NetNewsWire on the other hand has a “Reader View” button which then displays the full article (not only the synopsis as Vienna does) and the embeded images.
I don’t see what Vienna would be doing wrong here, given the way the feed is build - images are included as enclosure, there is nothing in the feed (RSS or Atom) specification that requires a feed reader to display those images.
Below is the raw xml code for one article as an example:

Re: Pictures don't display
Hello,
Thanks for the additional info.
In Vienna, if I right-click on the missing image I get a command 'Download image'. Executing this command gets me a 68 bytes "Unknown" document in the Downloads folder. If I double-click that document I get
<svg xmlns='http://www.w3.org/2000/svg' viewBox='0 0 664 443'></svg>
Still not the missing image.
What other way do you suggest I should try ?
Thanks and regards.

I am not sure I know what way Vienna provides to view the missing media.

Re: Pictures don't display
So, do I understand this correctly? You actually have this feed set to “Load full HTML articles” (in the Get Info box for that feed), and then the images are not displayed. Only a place-holder image is visible.
I assumed at first that your problem was in the feed view.
One possibility is that you have javascript disabled (turned off), in the Vienna Preferences > advanced panel. Enable Javascript, restart Vienna and try again to view those articles. If you have some system-wide ad-blocker, that might be another possibility to affect the image loading (in Vienna).

Hello,
Thanks. Unfortunately it did not help. The settings are, and have always been, what you have recommended.

Re: Pictures don't display
Hello,
I am not sure I fully understand what is your intent and what you are trying.
As explained by @sandstrom, in the feed itself, the only images are defined as "enclosures" (see the specifications), which are similar to attachments in an e-mail.
Enclosures may have various types : they can be images, audio files (often the case for podcasts), videos, PDFs or Microsoft Office files…
They can also be small or quite large.
That's probably why Vienna was designed to not automatically play or even download enclosures.
They are however presented to the user. Here is a screenshot from "Le Monde" feed as it is displayed by Vienna.

You have three different ways to access the enclosure :
- the link at the top of the post (circled in green) will open the image in a Vienna tab
- the link on the left side of the enclosure panel (circled in orange) will open the image in your default browser (in my case, Safari)
- the "Download" button on the right side of the enclosure panel (circled in pink) will download the image in your Download folder. Once the file is downloaded, the label of the button will change to "Open in Preview" (or name of any application set as default for the file type), and a click will launch that application.
Hope this helps.
