Bug: Hotkey Cmd-W Fails to Close Window

Post by scrutinizer »

Hello,
3.8.5 :5ac6c328: (8030) on macOS 10.14 "Mojave". The system hotkey to close an app's window ⌘-W is not working.

It is listed as ⌘⇧-W (Cmd-Shift-W) in the menu here (macOS 13.3), which is certainly non-standard.

Bizarre. It must be brought to compliance with macOS standard key combinations that has become ingrained in the habitual patterns of using a Mac. And one such pattern is closing any window with ⌘-W, not with ⇧⌘-W or ⇧⌘⌥⌃-W or the likes.

You can of course change it yourself. System Preferences (or Settings) > Keyboards > Keyboard Shortcuts > select App shortcuts in the list, and follow the steps (it is quite evident). Insert the menu name exactly “Close Window” (or equivalent for your language).

Double checking, I see that ⌘-W is assigned to “Close Tab”, which kinda make sense (I personally never use tabs in Vienna, and never close the main window). Safari actually uses the same set.

Almost all applications supporting tabs do so (cf. Firefox, Chrome, Preview…)

When a single tab is remaining, ⌘-W should generally be reassigned to “Close Window”.
Vienna does that, but the problem is that tabs are managed differently when the "Preview new browser" setting is enabled. I will fix that in 3.9, once the code for old browser is removed.

Thanks for noticing this. Issue opened : https://github.com/ViennaRSS/vienna-rss/issues/1664
