Perian 1.1.3 Subtitle in FrontRow WORKS ALMOST!

He...Great job with the 1.1.3 update!!!

Now I can watch my videofiles with subtitles in FrontRow. But this only works when you go to Movies > Folder Movies > xxxx.avi (or whatever).
The subtitles don't show up when you have a reference file in iTunes and want to play the videofile directly in FrontRow > Movies > xxx.avi.
Because...if you have a reference file in iTunes you can see your Movies in iTunes. This means that the videofile shows up directly under Movies in FrontRow.

1. So why doesn't it work with the reference files???
2. Anybody else got this problem?
3. Is there ever gonna be an option to choose the Fontsizeof the subtitles....cause now there HUGEEEE!!! :)

Hope to hear from somebody soon! :*

By reference movie in iTunes, do you mean that you dragged the file into iTunes? If so, was it copying the file into your iTunes library? If that's what you are talking about, then iTunes made a copy of the file, and put it somewhere else on the HD. iTunes will not copy the subtitles, which means that when perian is told to open the .avi, it is a different file, one where the subtitles are no where to be found short of searching the entire hard drive (which is undesirable).

You could open the .avi file in QuickTime Player, and save it as a .mov (not export). That will preserve the subtitles when the file is moved around.

What I mean is the following.

1. I use Quicktime to open the xxx.avi file. Then go to File > Save As and I choose Save as reference file.
2. Then I drag the Reference file into iTunes (iTunes will copy the Reference file into /Users/MyName/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Movies/)
3. I move the original xxx.avi file to /Users/MyName/Movies/.

In FrontRow, when I go to Movies the xxx.avi will show because it is loaded in iTunes. But when I play the file it doesn's show any subtitles. If I go to
Movies > Movie (file) > xxx.avi then the videofile plays WITH subtitles.

It doens't matter if I put the Subtitle in the same directory as the Reference file or in the same location as the original xxx.avi videofile. FrontRow won't
show any subtitles when using the Reference file to finde the original xxx.avi file....

I'll blame iTunes then. Sounds like it is intentionally disabling certain parts of the file. Unless your external subtitles are .idx/.sub, the reference movie doesn't need the subtitle file anymore. Text-based subtitles are just completely imported into the movie file (it's just easier that way).

I don't completely understand what you're saying. Do you mean, using .sub files instead of .srt files will solve my issue? No ideas for a workaround?

I have the same problems. The reference files in iTunes play with no problem including the subtitles but in FrontRow doesn't seem to work... the image disappears when the subtitles should start and I have only the audio track.

Frontrow isn't using 1.1.3. Force-quit it.

Just that Perian handles different types of subtitles differently. When I mentioned the .idx/.sub, I meant the VobSub files. VobSub requires two files, .idx and .sub. The .sub files by themselves are a completely different kind of subtitle (Yeah, they should have used a different extension).

Essentially, if the subtitles are a text file (look at yours to see what they are), Perian stores the subtitles in the reference movie and doesn't need the subtitle file after that. If the subtitles are binary, then the reference movie save a reference to the original file.

Still no luck... I force-quit, I restarted... The original files do work but not the reference files.

The subtitle hack can't work with .mov files, yeah. This is pretty much a QT limitation, unless the track blend mode can be changed from inside its decompressor.
