Perian 1.1.3 and (hard) .sub files

Hi,
I've seen some other posts with Perian 1.1.3 and subtitle problems but didn't see any definitive reply for this one...
I just don't get any subtitle displayed when I play an ".avi" movie with Quicktime player (Pro v7.5.5) on my MacBook pro (2.33 Ghz 2, Gb RAM, OS X 10.5.5). The subtitle files (.idx and .sub) have the same name as the .avi file.
As far as I know, there are 2 different types of ".sub" files. One with "text-coded" subtitles, one with "hard-coded" subtitles (I suppose with some already rendered graphical format).
The one I am trying to us is the hard-coded one (I'm deducting this from the fact the .sub file size is 7.7 Mb).
VLC displays the subtitles OK.
Did anyone succeeded in playing with Quicktime Player and Perian .avi with hard .sub/.idx files or is this still a known problem/missing feature?
Actually, my ultimate goal is to convert to .mp4 with subtitles hard-coded on the video track. Is there any other known way to do this (with hard /sub files) on Mac ?
Thanks,
TheLagosChap.
