Mkv don't work + it keeps restarting my control panel

Postby matiasduarte » Sat Jul 11, 2009 6:31 pm

So I download and install Perian onto my MacBook Air running the Snow Leopard beta.
I try and play a mkv file and I get:
The document “*********************.mkv” could not be opened. QuickTime Player cannot open files of this type.

I suspect something's wacky about the installation because when I open the control panel app and click the Perian Pane I also get this error:
To use the “Perian” preferences pane, System Preferences must quit and reopen.

After that the pref pane seems to work, but if I quit the control panel app and launch it again, the same thing happens.

The Snow Leopard beta install initially had some permissions problems so maybe that's the root cause?

Any help much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

We can't discuss Snow Leopard until it's released, but I think you should try logging out and back in.

Quicktime 10 is incomplete. Apple will hold back features until final release.
Perian is 32bit prefpane. Apple re-wrote everything in Snow Leopard with 64bit code and it is backwards compatible with 32bit. if you notice, most of your 3rd party prefpanes will cause System Preferences to reboot into 32bit version (you'll notice it says 64 or 32 bit at the top)
You can invoke Quicktime 7 installation somehow but I don't know how you would go about doing that. If you manage that, perian will once again allow matroska video to play through Quicktime 7.
hope that helps!

or, just wait. Snow Leopard is released in September for like $40 or something. only a couple months away.
for now, use VLC. that's what I would do. VLC has never let me down.

From what I know, QuickTime X use UTI to identify what it can open and what it can't. The problem is that no applications installed by default on Leopard or Snow Leopard declare any UTIs for mkv. In the meantime you can download an application like NicePlayer which does it. And mkv will magically start to work in QT based applications.
