Just downloaded Perian 1.2 - it dosnt install?

I have the same problem. Did this get resolved? It says that it is installed in my user account (I opted for that rather than all users).

EDIT: If I install it for this user only then the pref pane says it is installed. If I install it for all users on the computer then although there is a pref pane in my system preferences, it says that Perian is not installed. Installing in either location, does not let QT Player play avi files.

Terminal method: 'sudo chown -R `whoami` ~/Library/QuickTime' and then type your password.

But it's probably faster to delete ~/Library/QuickTime; the installer will recreate it and the files in it now aren't needed for anything.

By the way, I tried to reproduce this problem (by installing Google Voice and Video) but the installer works properly for me - it doesn't install anything in my user directory. When did you install it - you might have gotten an older version? DId you install it in the first place?

I am a bit confused as to 'which files and where' should be installed by Perian.

I deleted all references to Perian in /library/ and ~/library/. Also any Quicktime preferences etc and then re-installed. Prompted to instal for 'this user' or 'all users' I opted for all users. Prompted for my admin password and installation seemed to go OK. Certainly no error messages. Then the Perian Pref pane opened up in System Preferences saying Perian was not installed. So clicked on Install and again prompted for Admin password, installation shoes as installed. But QT will not play avi files.

I found out that this was caused by an older version of Google video chat. The new one works, and will delete the old version's files but won't fix root owning ~/Library/QuickTime/. We can probably clean it up in the installer.

I got the same problem here but had it fixed by repeating the whole process from the beginning...

Here's what worked for me:

1. Removed Perian (removed by right-clicking on the Perian icon in System Preference and clicking the 'Remove Perian' option)

2. Reinstalled Perian (except this time I selected the option to 'Install for All Users,' which then prompted me for the admin user password, which sets the correct file permissions. When I installed Perian originally and selected the 'this user only' install, I wasn't prompted for my password, which I assume must be related to the permission issues that caused the 'Error AC3MovieImport.component' thing.)

It is definitely a permission problem... I fixed it by googleing the AC3 file that could not be extracted. I found out that that file is not put in the library/quicktime/ folder. It is put in the library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components folder. I checked each folder in the hierarchy starting with library and made sure each had 'Read & Write' permission by hitting 'command+i'. Audio folder didn't even have my login name, it said 'staff' , I don't know what that means but I changed permissions to 'Read & Write' and tried again to install (first right clicking to remove the pane from system prefs)... AND THATS WHAT WORKED FOR ME!

Hello guys,
i faced the same problem above and can't install perian for ac3 component install fails.
I tried every solutions mentioned above, change permissions, removing and install again and so on but nothing changes, still won't install perian
