cheers
yes Ive clicked the 'install perian' button.
ps - my .avi audio woes have not been resolved. Im trying to burn avi's in toast and losing audio. Im happy playing files in VLC, but to burn them to DVD I need the correct codex, Ive downloaded various codex but still not resolved. help me obi one perian. lol
at no point does the perian installer (double clicking the Perian.prefPane icon in the .dmg) ask me where I would like to install perian. It just adds the pref pane to preferences then opens the pane.
Also Ive just checked /library/quicktime and ~/library/quicktime/
and cannot find a perian.component - Im not sure if Im meant to or not, only that read on this forum some other user looking for a perian.component, anyrate I do not seem to have a perian.component

It is supposed to do that.

Yes, it should have installed the component in ~/Library/Quicktime/.
Try to install again?

I am having the exact same problem. OSX SL won't play avi files so I'm trying to get the perian patch. . . everything goes as described but then in the perian preference panel it says it's not installed. When I click the button to install it nothing happens. Any help much appreciated.
You have another one installed as a system (not user) preference pane. Did you install the same one in a different place? I'm not sure you can do that, though.
I'm also not able to correctly install. What is happening for me is that it is installing in my user directory. Instead of being in /Library/QuickTime/ it is installing into /home/myusername/Library/QuickTime/Perian.component.
So I tried moving the component file into the other directory with no luck. What I'm hoping to see with perian is some more export options, particularily mkv. But I don't get that yet. Can anyone help?
Having the same problem here, even with the 1.2.1 update, but this time I get an error message: "extraction of ac3movieimport.component failed".
By the way, don't know if it makes a difference but I have both QuickTime X and QuickTime 7 installed.
Yup, same thing here... tried updating, erasing, installing, changing permissions ( ~/Library/Quicktime doesn't exist on my system, only have /Library/QuickTime/)
I finally appzapped it, and now I have nothing. Still won't install. I'll keep working on it. Perian 1.2.1, SL 10.6.2
No luck for me as root ... no matter what I do I can't get it to install from the Pref Pane. Anyone else have any ideas? Some kind of permission thing?
It works fine on my Macbook Pro. My Mac Pro, not so much.

You tried installing as a user without a ~/Library/Quicktime and it didn't work? Can you write to ~/Library (i.e. can you create the folder QuickTime by yourself)?
