I also have a problem with some avi files. It seems to be divx ones that don't play.
I checked this sample, and it does not play. I don't believe there are any subtitle extensions involved.

This is solely the regression of QTX Player in Lion mentioned elsewhere on these forums. The problem is Apple's and there is nothing we can do about it. File a bug with Apple:

I finally have it working. This is what I did

Completely uninstalled ver 1.2.3 including the pref pane.

Found 1.2.2 on the internet and installed that - everything is working fine again.

I concur with Fireblade69 - this is a 1.2.3 regression. If this is truly a QTX Player regression as gbooker suggests, then Perian 1.2.2 is able to get around it but 1.2.3 is not.

My testing:

Uninstall-Install procedure (entering password when prompted):
1) System Preferences -> Perian -> Remove Perian (text to right then says "Installed Version: -")
2) Show All
3) control-click Perian -> Remove "Perian" Preference Pane
4) double click Perrian_ver.dmg (where ver = 1.2.2 or 1.2.3)
5) double click Perian.prefPane
6) eject Perian ver (where ver = 1.2.2 or 1.2.3)
7) System Preferences -> Perian -> Install Perian (text to right confirms installed version)

Overall test procedure:
1) Uninstall and Install Perian 1.2.3
2) Double-click .avi test file. Quicktime 10.1 (501) opens.
3) click Play. Notice it stops immediately.
4) move slider to mid-movie. See still image.
5) click Play. Notice it still stops immediately.
6) close Quicktime.
7) Uninstall and Install Perian 1.2.2
8) Double-click .avi test file. Quicktime 10.1 (501) opens mid movie.
9) click Play. Play works normally.
10) move slider to mid-movie. Movie continues playing
11) close Quicktime.
12) Uninstall and Install Perian 1.2.3
13) Double-click .avi test file. Quicktime 10.1 (501) opens mid movie.
14) click Play. Notice it stops immediately.
15) move slider to mid-movie. See still image.
16) click Play. Notice it still stops immediately.
17) close Quicktime.

Thank you Perian folks for giving me the "Skip this version" option in the check for updates. I'll stick with 1.2.2 for now.

And what problem exactly are you thinking this thread is about, because your reproduction steps spell it out that you're talking about a different problem than what the original poster is talking about. I think you just found a random thread about avi playback issues and just started posting in it.

This thread is about NO playback, not playback and then stopping. Your testing shows that you have SOME playback, and then it doesn't work. I realize some of this seems complicated, but these are 2 different issues and you should have started another thread, and included a sample.

I had a similar problem - QT failing to play any AVI file, with an error about missing codecs, after upgrading to Perian 1.2.3. Reverting to 1.2.2 fixed it. I'm not going to try to analyse in detail whether everyone in this thread is having exactly the same problem; for all I know there might also be an issue in the Lion version of QT itself as some are claiming. But the fact that the problem started when I upgraded Perian (not when I installed Lion), and went away when I switched back to 1.2.2, is pretty clear proof that at least some of the recent AVI problems are a bug in Perian 1.2.3. I'm sticking with 1.2.2 until I hear that this has been fixed.

BTW if anyone else is looking for 1.2.2, I found it at http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Perian/old-versions.

(PS. Switching off the load subtitles flag made no difference, and QT7 gave the same error.)

Clearly no one cares to actually provide useful information. Yet another reason why it is long past time to shut these forums down.
