Question on install notes...

Post by cisbell »

Hi,

Looked though the forums, didn't see anything RE: this note on the Perian site. Under the support tab, it says the following: "Please consider removing obsolete QuickTime Components: FFusion, Xvid Delegate, 3ivX, DivX, DivX Decoder, XviD, msmpeg4v1, msmpeg4v2, AviImporter, EX_M4S2, Casio AVI Importer, AC3 Codec, and MatroskaQT."

I have several of these components installed. Are you stating that if I have these components loosely installed, I can remove them without any negative effects? i.e., these components are built into Perian support? Will removing them affect any previous files that may have been encoded by these components? Does removing them decrease the likelihood of OS crashes, assuming they might have been responsible at any time in the first place?

Just curious as I'm a believer in "out with the old.." to keep things running cleanly.

Thanks.

These are codecs which have known bugs and will cause you problems. We encourage their removal because Perian replaces their functionality and in most, if not all, does a vastly superior job.

Awesome. Thanks. I've attached a link to a jpg of my components directory. I'm assuming the ones I have highlighted are correct from your list, assuming some naming changes. Yes? Do you see any others that should probably be disregarded and deleted for similar reasons? Maybe I have something that you'd also like to include in your list?

Thanks again.

AC3MovieImport is part of Perian. A52Codec is likely in the wrong directory. If you delete these two, the preference pane gives you the option to re-install them.

You likely want to remove the FLV components, unless they are encoders.
