Forwarding between PPC and Intel Macs
Forwarding between PPC and Intel Macs
I've got Growl 0.74 installed on a PowerMac G5 and a Mac Pro, both running OS X 10.4.8
Notifications from one do not show up on the other, and vice versa, even though both instances of Growl are marked to listen for incoming notifications, as well as to forward to the other Mac (they are each shown in the respective opposite Growl Prefspane)...
What to do ?

Worked for a while, then stopped again
More info on this problem : forcing apps to re-register with Growl made the messages also show up on the other Mac, but after a while that ceased to work again...
Any suggestions ?

Growl 1.1 includes a note about this in its Network tab.

I seem to have the same issue with network forwarding, though both macs are PPC. I've disabled the firewall on the laptop, which allows messages to come through now, but not with completely correct behavior.
With a one way setup, from desktop (spartan) to laptop (madachu) I execute the following on the desktop:
growlnotify -t boo -m 'I did stuff 1'
growlnotify -t boo -m 'I did stuff 2' -H madachu.local
Then I perceive this behavior on the desktop:
msg> 'I did stuff 1'
The laptop (madachu):
msg> 'I did stuff 2'
msg> 'I did stuff 1'

Not networking either
I am trying with my MacBook and my PM G4. I don't know why this won't work. It was working so well with my other iMac over wireless. I unblocked the ports mentioned above. I am running 10.4.8 Client on the MB and 10.4.8 Server on the G4.

I have a PPC G4 and an Intel Core Duo Mac mini connected via an AirPort network and have been trying this feature with Adium. Although my testing is not complete it seems that having iTunes running on either box - be it at the front or in the background - prevents such messages being displayed. Indeed, this seems to be a problem with non-networked notifications - though, again, I cannot be certain about this since I need to do some further testing. If anyone else can prove this please let me and others know here and in that case log one or two bugs as appropriate.
Doesn't work any more
Sadly, for a while everything worked, and now it doesn't work any more, in either direction, between a PowerMac G5 and a Mac Pro... both running 10.4.8 and Growl 0.76 ... All firewall settings (both software and NAT hardware on the router) have been told to let the traffic through, but it does not work... Pity...
Incidentally, I usually have iTunes running on one of the machines, I quit it, but it hasn't solved anything, so I presume it isn't related... Perhaps I also need to restart both machines... Will try that next...

The way to set up notifications is to check the "Network" preference box "Forward notifications to other computers" on the sending computer and then select from the list below the computer you want to receive them - and to set the "Listen for incoming notifications" under "Network" on the chosen one. You appear to have worked this one out, like me, despite the lamentable dearth of documentation in this area - something I'll put a request in for later - the lack of which is classic bad practice by most developers I've come across. (Sorry, chaps, but I've worked in enough rubbish software houses to justify this view - though I appeciate the team's efforts.) However, if the receiving computer disappears - be it following a restart of that or a network failure - then the chosen receiving computer disappears from the list on the sending computer and when it comes back online the box by it in that list is not checked - hence no forwarding will happen. This is a strange behaviour as I'd expect the settings to stay and I wonder if it's a bug. Please try it and if you see the same problem report back and see if any of the developers respond. If you do and they don't then log a bug.

I can reproduce the problem by turning off the AirPort service in my sending computer and then back on again - though, oddly, not by turning it off in my receiving computer. (It remains "available" in that case.) On doing so I watched the receiving computer disappear from the list (by leaving the Growl Preferences "Network" Pane open) and when it re-appeared the tick wasn't restored. Perhaps someone else could try to do something similar and report back their results and advise which computers they are using. Of course you could try this too.
