problem with new download

Post by dawghausfrau »

i just downloaded 7.5. all my settings from before seem to not be changed. the preferencepane was put in the users folder like before, which caused me problems with superduper notification so i remembered and moved it to the preferencepanes folder in library within the system folder of my hd.

however, since trashing the white volume from my desktop and from the applications folder (i thought i was supposed to do that) - which was showing me all the stuff within it, like extras and a preferece pane i could open with the growl picture, an application for uninstall, etc - i no longer have all those extras. i can open up sys preferences and see i have growl but i no longer seem to have any of the items that came with the program. when i had the white volume in the applictions folder and clicked on it it put a copy of it on the desktop. when i trashed them all i lost the stuff.

forgive my obvious stupidity but i really am not good with OSX and downloading applications properly. if someone can give me a step by step of what i am supposed to do maybe i will end up with the complete application, installed properly.

i have an empty growl folder in application support in my user library.

i also cannot now seem to launch growl preferences from the growl paw in the menu, among other things.

and a trial run of superduper did NOT generate an email notification, even though the preferences are still set for that in the growl preference panel, the preferencepane is in its proper place and my email account is at the top of the mail accounts listing as per the previous fixing of this problem. i am back to square one, once again.

i just tried to run superduper with a bubble notification instead of the mailme one. it did not appear. so, thinking something was wrong in a big way i trashed the entire program - everything i could find that had the word growl in it.

even after all that the paw was still appearing in the menu. go figure.

i hope i can do this properly. i am clueless and seem to be doing everything wrong.

Ok, despite my brain damage I was able to successfully install Growl and performed a SuperDuper! backup with a MailMe notification.

However, I am still confused about the contents of that white volume disk, which initially contained the preference pane, the uninstall application, extras, some files which turned out to be instructions for installation, etc.

I put that white disk into my applications folder. When I clicked on it once it showed me the contents. But when I double clicked on it the thing became an alias and I have no idea where those extra things are - whether they are somehow built in to the program or if I again inadvertently trashed them. Was I supposed to take the uninstall application and the extras folders, etc, and put them somewhere?

I don't know why this is posing so many problems for me. I'm clearly on a steep learning curve from OS9. In the olden days when I installed a program it automatically put everything wherever it was supposed to be. It is not so clear cut here.

If someone could offer a word of advice I would really appreciate it. I'm sure my posts are coming off as annoying and I apologize for that.

If I double click on the white alias I get a message that it can not open the program because the original program cannot be found. I can fix or delete the alias or click "ok." I did the latter because i i don't know what "fixing" it will do. I know I've deleted it in the past - was told here I don't need the alias. But at this point I don't know whether I'm coming or going and don't want to screw things up since the program does seem to be working properly despite the things I seem to be missing.

When you say "completely removed" what did you do?

I didn't say "completely removed" - which one of my insane posts are you referring to?

I trashed the .dmg, if that's what you mean, and if there was a white volume mounted I may have dismounted it, but since I've downloaded this twice today I may be thinking of the first time. The real change happened when I double clicked on the white volume disk after I put it in the applications folder (where maybe it isn't supposed to live). Then it became an alias, etc.

I downloaded Growl again (but did not install it) just so I could see what else there was in the program that I had inadvertently trashed somehow during yesterday's installation.

I have:

An Extras folder containing:
growlctl
GrowlDict
GrowlMail
growlnotify
GrowlSafari
Hardware Growler
Rawr-jour

Three web launching items:
Get more styles
Growl Documentation
Growl version history

the Growl.prefPane (I know I don't need this because I already have it)

Scripts folder containing several other folders:

Email
Finder Folder Actions
Growl SVN Repo Scripts
iCal
iPod
irssi
iTunes
Salling Clicker
Snak
X-Chat

Uninstall Growl, an application

Now, as I said yesterday, none of these things except for the prefPane, appear to be on my system and Growl seems to be operating correctly and sending me my MailMe SuperDuper! notification with no problem BUT perhaps these are things I may want to make use of in the future.

Where do I put them, should I decide to keep them, or if you think Growl needs to have them on my HD to have things running as Growl intends them to run??

Thanks.

A lot of these are just add ons which can be used however you want. Most of their names should indicate what they do.

Personally I use GrowlTunes and GrowlMail, but other folks seem to like HardwareGrowler a lot, and we just added Rawr-Jour which seemed useful to me.

Mostly these are proofs of concept though, meaning they show what Growl can do to folks so they can figure out how to use Growl for what they want/need.

Thanks, Mr. Tick. I can see where GrowlTunes might come in handy, for instance. I'll have to poke around and see if I can figure them out. Rawr-Jour I have no idea. :)

Shall I make a Growl folder and put it inside an Application Support folder with all of this stuff? I have one such named folder already in Application Support in my Users folder (where I have a Plugins - empty - and a Tickets folder - with a Growl.growlTicket and a SuperDuper!growlTicket) but since I installed Growl globally so the prefPane would be in the right place I am not sure where to put these things.

Nah, application support is somewhere you shouldn't be putting applications. Make an Applications folder in your home directory, or put the Extras you want to use (which are applications, not pkg installers) in the /Applications folder.
