GrowlMail - won't display for non-inbox mail

For some reason GrowlMail will not display notifications for new emails in a non-Inbox mailbox, but it does display notifications for emails that stay in the main Inbox (i.e., I have rules that move many of my emails to other mailboxes and I don't see Growl notifications for these, only ones that stay in the main Inbox). This is happening on a MacBook Pro.

Diagnosis:
- "Inbox Only" in unchecked in the GrowlMail preferences.
- Console.app tells me that the GrowlMail 2.1 bundle loads just fine (I did have other mailbundle trouble, but I don't think it was related to the GrowlMail problems---I got an error when trying to load MailEnhancer.mailbundle which I have so that I can see the total unread count in the Dock. That bundle is sadly now uninstalled.).
- I've tried reinstalling both Growl and GrowlMail (including deleting the .mailbundle and the ticket) and reran the two Terminal.app enableBundles commands, but nothing changes.
- I've tried installing the mailbundle in both ~/Library/Mail/Bundles and /Library/Mail/Bundles.
- All Growl notifications for other applications behave perfectly normal.

The problems ONLY occur on the MacBook Pro that I use at work. GrowlMail (and MailEnhancer) works fine on my G4 PowerBook at home. Could this be an Intel problem? I'm running 10.4.8 on both machines, with all the latest updates installed.

Another interesting occurrence:
I use an IMAP server for my email. I receive GrowlMail notifications on the work MBP for Inbox and (I believe, but forgot to explicitly test) non-Inbox messages that I've already read at home on the G4PB (they arrive as already read), but I don't receive GrowlMail messages at home on the G4PB while Mail.app is catching up with messages that I read at work.

I just noticed that if I enable Growl's logging, I get this in Console.app when I open Mail:

Code: Select all

2007-02-26 19:41:11.811 Mail[13260] Loaded GrowlMail 2.1
2007-02-26 19:41:11.811 GrowlHelperApp[303] 2007-02-26 19:41:11 -0500 GrowlMail registered
2007-02-26 19:41:11.819 GrowlHelperApp[303] 2007-02-26 19:41:11 -0500 Growl: Application re-registered (GrowlMail registered) - Priority 0
Does that help anyone think of anything that could be wrong? Any suggestions besides reinstalling OS X?

What version of Growlmail? Did it work before?

Gah, just discovered this was my setup as of the writing of the post on 2/22:

Growl/GrowlMail on the MacBook Pro: 0.7.6/2.1
Growl/GrowlMail on the PowerBook: 0.7.6/2.0

And! I just upgraded to GrowlMail 2.1 on the PowerBook and it gives me the same problematic behavior:
- No notifications on new non-inbox mail
- Notifications are displayed for already-read-on-a-different-computer but downloading-for-the-first-time IMAP mail

I didn't backup GrowlMail 2.0, which behaves properly in every way. :( Can I download the installer somewhere?

Found it. It comes with Growl 0.7.4: http://growl.info/files/Growl-0.7.4.dmg.
Glad everything's back to normal. :)

Sorry to dredge this up again...

Gah! Just installed Growl 1.1 and the included GrowlMail and I'm getting Growl notifications for all of my newly-downloaded but-already-read-on-a-different-computer IMAP email again. And the Growl 0.7.4 dmg isn't available any more. :(

I get far too many emails during the day to want to experience them again when I come home and open up Mail.app. This makes me feel this annoyed: #$%!#$%*&^%$#$%!!!

Is anyone experiencing the same behavior? Is this a bug or a feature?

Console.app says that Mail.app loads GrowlMail 1.1. I was previously running GrowlMail 2.0, which behaved "correctly" (as opposed to GrowlMail 2.1, which behaved in the same way as the current GM 1.1).

The version numbers of Extras now match the version of Growl they are distributed with, such that GrowlMail 1.1 is what shipped with Growl 1.1, to be clear and easy to comprehend.

I would suggest holding onto .7.4. Go look in svn, there should be a .7.4 tag. Build GrowlMail from that.
