[idea] And what about a centralized update system ?

Sometimes, while launching AdiumX or Cyberduck (or ...), I have a popup “ A new version is available ! Do you want to update AdiumX ? "

Ok, almost nothing to do to update, just one or two clicks.

But Growl could search for updates for all registred programs, and automatically download the updates, couldn't it ?

We can imagine that when an application registers to growl, it also tells to Growl : "My current version is 1.0.42. Regularly look at ftp://mywonderfulapplication.com/lastversion.txt" and if a new version is available, please launch the following script"

What do you think about this idea ?

This is outside the scope of Growl's intended purpose. Growl is meant to be a notification system, not a software update mechanism.

If you intend this as a completely new application suggestion (which is should be), I have 2 things to say:
1. We have Sparkle, it rocks.
2. For this to be done well, it has to be done by Apple and integrated into the system.

Moreover, for it to be a real win, it has to be a minimal opt-in technology (which requires developers to buy into your idea and then add support, so there's a support curve that now exists as well) or better, no work necessary at all (a much tougher challenge.)

I think Appfresh does this, albeit with errors....

AppFresh is in pretty early beta stages, but it looks like it will turn out to be pretty cool.

A guy I know is working on a solution to this too. I like the initial idea better than the appfresh idea too. We'll see if it pans out.

Growl will never update applications for you. That's not what it's for.
