Network notifications from Widgets crashes destination

I have network notifications set up and working reasonably successfully. However, when a notification is triggered from a widget rather than a standard app, Growl on the destination computer hangs and must be force-quit.

The widgets in question are 'App Update' and 'Widget Update', found here.
