Wrong version of Growl opens when New version installed

This subject was brought up in another thread. my apologies if it was responded to in the wrong place.

several people noted when the new 1.1.2 Growl was installed that the old version .0.7.6 and other versions on up would still show as working.

I found the problem it seems that the installer designer did not put in a script to scan for anywhere on the drive, Main Library or user Library, for any and all previous versions. Then demanding a restart of the computer to purge old version from system. Doing a find file shows two PrefPane files one in User Library , one in Main Library. Should be installed in Main Library period!

anyway to cure the problem I had to do find file, find anything to do with growl. Remove to trash can. Then run installer over. after that and a restart of the system everything is fine.

one thing I miss on Interarchy I now have to predefine the sounds used where before. Growl already had some premade ones that worked nice.

The problem is that Growl.prefpane (0.7.6) is in ~/Library/PreferencePanes. The installer can't touch ~ though to remove the prefpane. Since the installer (at least for 10.4, probably in 10.5 since we've had reports of the custom install location bit not work) can't touch ~ and installs into /, we're just going to run into this problem.

The main issue is that for os x, anything in ~ overrides / for things like prefpanes. So you actually have both installed. The fun part is when you have 2 versions of Growl actually notifying too.

There's not much we can do about this.

Also, you do not need to restart for thi, or most any kind of thing like this. All you need to do is make sure that GrowlHelperApp and GrowlMenu are not running, then go into ~/Library/PreferencePanes/ and delete Growl.prefpane. Do this while System Preferences is not running.
