Can Growl alerts displayed without GrowlHelper app

Hi,
I am newbie to Growl. I have installed Growl and prepared one sample cocoa app for displaying alerts.

My question is: Alerts are displayed only when the GrowlHelper app is running in the background. But, i have observed Yahoo messenger, in that alerts are displaying irrespective of GrowlHelper app.

I found growl framework in the Yahoo messenger bundle contents. I too achieve the same functionality(alerts displaying through Growl) like in Yahoo. Is there any way to get the same behavior?

I have checked out Growl svn. In Xcode project, i have found different targets including Dylib. Is this Dylib would help?

No, GrowlHelperApp is Growl for all intents and purposes.

Yahoo is a rather bizarre case. If Growl is running and enabled, it's used. If it's not, the Yahoo application itself posts notifications independent of Growl which look like a Growl notification of a particular display style (I forget which).
