Growl widget working, "desktop" version not

I'm using os x 10.4.11, Growl version 1.1.2. I used to use the widget but figured the system preferences version would be better for my uses. I stopped using widgets the whole thing got annoying.

Mail notify works well, some apps are registering automatically. What doesn't seem to be working other than my brain, is the notification that for example, there is an update to Transmission. I know this is true I did a manual check - didn't download it though I need a test case.

Also, how do I manually add applications or if they don't auto add they aren't "growl-able?"

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Growl doesn't know when an application needs an update and doesn't inform you of that unless the application explicitly does so. If an application isn't automatically added then it doesn't support Growl and you'll need to contact the developers to request they add support.

Thanks, I'll e-mail the app-folks asking for Growl support.

Is there a way to include iCal in the notify? I've seen scripts and they say to call it from iCal. I'm not a programmer so if there is an easy way to explain how to call (I know what a call is, what it's purpose but not how to apply all to iCal) Or is there an add-on such as the one for mail?
