Cannot Install 1.1.2 version and get rid of old 0.7.4

I'm having a problem in that I have had Growl installed for some time on my system and, when I pull up the Growl Preference pane, it says that the current version is 0.7.4 and that Growl is set to auto check for updates daily. I see there have been updates and that is indeed not the current version. What could be causing that to not see the updates?
I have manually checked and it does see 1.1.2 is available and asks me if I want to download. I do so. From there, I run into more problems. If I attempt to install that newer version, I either get a message that the install failed and that I should contact the software developer or the install is supposedly successful but there is no indication beyond that message that this is true. Pulling up the preference pane still shows that older version.
When I attempt to just uninstall the older version completely before installing 1.1.2 through the utility that is included in the dmg folder, it asks for me to locate the Growlhelperapp.app file which I don't know how to find. Usually when I uninstall a program, I just go to my applications folder and delete the program file from there; however, I don't see Growl in that folder. I do see Gmail+Growl utility but that is the only program listing Growl.
Thanks in advance for any help!
