speech not working with Mail

I'm sure it's some simple setting, but I don't seem to get "speech" notifications for Mail. I have a MBPro (Intel), OS X 10.4.10, Mail 2.1.1, Growl 1.1.2
Mail's set to play a sound when I get new mail, but I don't know if that'll affect Growl's prefs? I'll provide more info if needed.
