Remote Computer Missing

Sorry if this is re-hash, but I couldn't find a similar topic in the forum. I am trying to set up remote notification from my desktop Mac to my MacBook. Both are running MacOS 10.5.3 and Growl 1.1.4. I set up my MacBook to Listen for incoming notifications and to Allow remote app registration. I tried to set up my desktop Mac to forward notifications, but the MacBook is not listed (the computer list is empty). This is especially confusing since I do see my desktop computer in the list on the MacBook, even though that option is obviously disabled. So it looks like I could send things from the laptop to the desktop if I wanted to, but not in the direction I desire.
This sounds like a firewall or permissions issue. Is there something in the Sharing control panel I need to activate on the MacBook? I didn't see anything that made any difference. Or is there a Leopard permissions issue I need to fix? I've had permission issues in the past with that machine, but thought they'd all been worked out many months ago.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
