Growl Doesn't appear to do anything

Post by djaneb »

I am a new user. Downloaded Growl 1.1.4, then GrowlMail plugin.

Haven't had any notifications.

Leopard 10.5.3.

In fact, Growl hasn't done anything at all. I'll keep searching forums for more info but I only downloaded for Mail.app notifications so am not sure what else to try to see if anything else is working.

I know it is running - I have icon in menu bar and have relaunched a few times to make sure. I have checked it's preferences to make sure nothing is hidden.

Unfortunately because I haven't used it before I don't know what to expect.

Many thanks if you can help me at all.

Try this:

That only means the status item is running. That's a separate process from Growl itself—necessarily, because otherwise you couldn't start Growl from it.
… and have relaunched a few times to make sure.
How, precisely?
I have checked it's preferences to make sure nothing is hidden.
What do you mean by this?

Great - now I know it works - thank you - a notification popped up.

By clicking "relaunch" in the icon bar.

I mean the item that says "Hide all notifications" isn't selected.
Obviously Growl is a happening thing because your applet worked - now I just have to work out the mail.app thing. Do you have any ideas of what I could try?
Thank you so much for your help.

Try this:

http://growl.info/documentation/faq.php ... oesnt-work

(Don't feel bad if you checked the FAQ and missed it—I just added that entry yesterday, the 21st.)

Thanks. I already had that enabled.

What I have found is that there is something a little weird about choosing the display type - I initially chose "MailMe". Hadn't changed it since I installed but just went in and decided to change it, in case that was a problem. When I changed it a preview of the display popped up but it wasn't the one I had clicked on. It was the one two below. When I click a display type it previews the one two below. And MailMe doesn't work at all in the preview - so that might explain the problem.

Now I have chosen "Above the Night" for both the Application display and the Notification display and I get Brushed when it previews it, but Above the Night when an actual notification comes in - which is just fine by me but obviously there is a little glitch somewhere.

Thanks for your help. I'm getting notifications now I have changed notification display preference but if you want any more info to help with this I'd be happy to supply it.

Reordering your message a little bit…

So, MailMe doesn't work at all for you?

What if you set MailMe as the display for Simplest Notifier Evar? Do you get mail shortly after hitting the button?

I'm assuming, of course, that you've configured MailMe's display settings.

This is a known bug in 1.1.4.
