Growl accepts registration but doesn't display notifications

First I had the repeatedly telling me to upgrade problem. Getting that resolved, I moved along to the "could not register Growl server" issue. I installed the 1.1.5 build from the thread on that issue and now my apps can register with growl however no notifications display! I tried a test app with perl (Mac::Growl) and with just applescript; they both registered events but nothing would display and no error messages on the console. I've tried rolling back to 1.1.4, 1.1.3 and 1.1.2 with no luck. Another symptom, the menu thingy is always grey. How should I proceed?

Anyway, I figured I would kill the HelperApp and try to start it from the commandline as root. Once I did that my test applescript notifier worked but no other apps worked. I then killed the Menu and started that as root and it appeared as a black paw (first time since the upgrade to 1.1.4) and my applications can notify me again!
