Can't change notification settings for applications

Hi,

I'm a Growl newbie and just installed today. I have had several apps show up in the application pane and also installed the mailgrowl and safarigrowl. My problem is that I cannot change the notification in any of these apps. For instance, I go into mail and change the notification from "new junk mail" to "new mail". I then exit out of preferences and open it back up and the notification is back to "new junk mail". This happens in every application I have in the Growl application pref. pane (safari, twitterific, omnifocus, etc.). I have no idea what I have done wrong and could sure use some advice.

I had this in Adium, it ended up because my account didn't have write access to my preferences.
