No GrowlHelperApp on install - problems with applications

I have just installed Growl 1.1.4 on my Leopard 10.5.5 MacBook, but it's not quite working as expected.

First of all, no GrowlHelperApp is installed. Is that normal?

Also, when I check which applications are active, I only get Firefox, Dropbox, Last.fm and Growlmenu. That's it.

When I run Transmit, for instance, I get nothing in Growl. I've tried quitting both apps, and restarting, but it doesn't help.

What is going on?

What do you mean by "no GrowlHelperApp is installed"?

When I tried uninstalling my first install using the uninstaller, it asked for GrowlHelperApp. Does this file perhaps not exist?

Also, why I am I getting so few Growl compatible apps in the applications list?

Let's work on one thing at a time.

The uninstaller assumes that Growl (GrowlHelperApp) is running, and if it is not, it errors out. GrowlHelperApp lives inside of the preference pane, it's not an additional thing to install.

Now, besides transmit, what applications are you expecting to show up in the applications tab?
