Safari/FF Download complete notify?

Post by admonderz »

What about a notification for download completion in FF and Safari, anything like that? `

Firefox 3 has support for this built-in. For Safari, use GrowlSafari, which is one of the Extras you can install from the Growl disk image.

Thanks, I thought it would be something simple like that.

QuickSilver 867 Mac OS X 10.4.11
Safari 4.0.2

Installed Growl 1.1.6 over 1.1.4
Installed Extra GrowlSafari 1.1.6 for Safari download finished notification
Downloaded 12.0KB file
There was no notification
Safari is not listed in Growl apps
Manually uninstalled Growl and GrowlSafari then reinstalled
Safari still not listed, still no notification

Only have three apps checked in Growl pref
GrowlMenu
libprs500
Transmission

Another thread, http://forums.cocoaforge.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=20209 GrowlSafari uncompatible with Safari 4, said something about having an old Growl framework installed somewhere and to check these folders, so I checked them with these results.

home folder
library = no frameworks

startup disk
library
frameworks = no Growl

startup disk
library
inputManagers = only GrowlSafari and LCC Scroll Enhancer Loader which does not use Growl

Now what?
Thanks for any help getting GrowlSafari up and running.

Does that mean that GrowlSafari is not listed? That's the name that will be there, not Safari.
startup disk
library
inputManagers = only GrowlSafari and LCC Scroll Enhancer Loader which does not use Growl
Make sure LCC is up to date. Old versions interfered with Growl.

Thanks for the quick response boredzo.

Sorry, I forgot to put in full name GrowlSafari, but it would be between GrownMenu and libprs500, two of only three checked apps, so I know it's not in app list.
Thanks for heads up about LCC.
I was running LCC 2.6 from June 2008.
Although it had caused no problems with previous versions of Growl, or anything else, I followed your advice just in case it would with newer Growl.
Downloaded/installed newest LCC released 8/5/9 v 3.0.
Uninstalled/reinstalled all Growl 1.1.6 and GrowlSafari.
Still no GrowlSafari in Growl applications list.

Any new ideas on how to get GrowlSafari up and running?

Launch Console, then Safari. Does GrowlSafari log any messages?

Well boredzo, I guess the Mac gods decided you were not going to give up, so they did.
Checked everything again before shutting down still no GrowlSafari in Growl app list.
Did what you suggested and got this log

===== Sunday, August 9, 2009 12:27:05 AM US/Eastern =====
2009-08-09 00:27:19.635 Safari[441] Loaded GrowlSafari 1.1.6
2009-08-09 00:27:19.635 Safari[441] Using Growl.framework 1.1.6 (1.1.6)

Checked Growl app list again and there it was.
Downloaded 2kb file and was notified.
I am very happy.
Thanks again boredzo.

Had you quit Safari at any time before your recent shutdown?

Yes, besides LCC, Growl and GrowlSafari, I had just installed Safari 4.0.2 and Java Release9 updates.
Then I ran DiskWarrior to rebuild directory and permissions before I found out GrowlSafari still was not in Grow app list.
Do you think GrowlSafari showing up after all that means I have a hardware, system or software problem?

The question is whether you had Safari running while installing GrowlSafari, and if you did, whether you quit Safari at any point after installing GrowlSafari and before rebooting.

I think the answer to all of the above is 'yes', but I can't swear to it.
After installing/removing Growl and GrowlSafari several times, and then the other updates, it all becomes a blur.
Sorry I can't be more helpful in pinpointing exactly what was going on.

The reason I ask is because the most likely reason GrowlSafari wouldn't show up is because you hadn't quit Safari before installing it or quit and relaunched Safari after installing it.

The application would have to do that when it receives the user-clicked-it message from Growl. That message is enabled in Growl by default, and I can't imagine why you'd make it a user-configurable setting in the application. So if it's not already doing it, it doesn't do it at all, and you should file a request with the developers of the application.
