GrowlMail notifications hang

Several times now when I first start Mail.app I get the GrowlMail notifications pop ups, but four of them remain on screen covering all windows below (along with the spinning beachball of death) and I have to restart the machine. Any solution?

What I have done is I go into the Activity Monitor, and I will quit the process called GrowlHelperApp first. Then in System Preferences I have to Stop and Start Growl. After that, I am back to normal.
