Can't install the new Growl

This isn't the first time either, it's a pain in the ass to install. But I remember there was a trick, anyone remember (specifically you, Tick)

When I installed, I first closed all apps that used growl notifications. Then when I double clicked the pref pane I got an error that "bubbles was in use" so the install couldn't continue. I manually dragged the pref pane to ~/Library/Preferencepanes and installed that way.
In similar fashion, I used the Growlmail installer (with no errors) and then manually moved the bundle to my ~/Library tree, out of /Library
