Growlmail and corrupted plist

Okay, I first installed GrowlMail according to the instructions in the Growlmail Installation.rtf document that accompanied the package. But I got no notifications with new mail (Growl working great otherwise.)

So I went to the website where there were *additional* instructions: to edit the mail.app plist file (adding defaults write com.apple.mail EnableBundles 1, and defaults write com.apple.mail BundleCompatibilityVersion 2). So I quit mail.app and tried that. When I restarted I found that the plist was corrupted, so that I whenever I tried to reply to any message in any account, I got a new message window instead. Only when I replaced the original plist did the reply function start working again. And in any case the notifications never worked.

So first, I think the instructions on the website and on the instructions included with Growl *need to be the same*.

And second, does anyone have any idea how I can get this to work?

The pkg installer should run those commands, if it's not running then we have other problems with the pkg installer that need to be corrected. No user should be forced to actually run those command.

I'll review the rest of your comments.

I thought that editing plist files was just the sort of thing an installer is supposed to do, but when GrowlMail didn't work, I thought that I had better try following the instructions on the webpage (http://growl.info/documentation/growlmail.php). If those instructions are not accurate, they really do need to be taken off the page.

Thanks for the quick reply!

We'll take them off the page when we're ready to.

Well, that sure puts me in my place, Mister Tick!

Don't bother to follow up any further; I've uninstalled the app, so I won't need any more of your excellent tech support. . . .

*sigh* This is the problem with communicating over the internet, I didn't mean anything by it and you read it as such.

Anyhow, if you'd like to continue let me know.

I think I am in a similar position as is (was) Ayjay:

I installed the growlmail bundle, and growl notified me saying that it had been registered, but I am not recieving any mail notifications - I have not run the script on the page.

I am running 10.4.3 and am fully updated, and as far as I can tell all the relevant check boxes are checked, both in Mail Prefs and in Growl's Pref pane.

and still no mail notifications...

any ideas?
