I've had to turn growlmail off, because it won't let mail shut down.

Telling mail to quit has the effect of greying out a lot of menu options - including the 'quit' option, making me use force quit instead.

Is this a reported problem? Are other people having it?

I'm using 10.4.4 on a G4 powerbook. Growlmail is my only plugin for mail.

Do you have any other plugins installed?

I had this problem with another plugin, I removed that and it resolved the issue.

Growl is my only plugin.

I used the latest system update (to 10.4.4, plus some other bits) recently, as well as adding gmail to pop3, but those are the only changes.

How did you disable the plugin?

Do you have multiple plugins installed of GrowlMail? (look in /Library/Mail/ and ~/Library/Mail

The problems cleared up after I followed the advice on the Apple webpage, which was to remove all plugins by deleting them.

I was using the growl plugin from /library, not ~/library.

I could re-install and see if it starts to happen again - would that help? I can't send a crash log because nothing crashes, so where else could I look to see what is happening on my machine?

Check in ~ and make sure there isn't a plugin in there. Some folks have this problem when they have an old GrowlMail in ~ and the newer one in /

Okay, so I uninstalled. When I looking at the growl stuff in application support, finder crashed - this might be an unrelated matter, but I have not seen finder crash on my machine for a long time.

Afterwards I reinstalled. I've had a few days of mail working fine with growl, but it just crashed again and I think I have spotted the problem.

Mail crashed when I told it to quit, whilst it was checking the mail. When I restarted I received a mail from twenty minutes before I told it to quit, and I think it had been checking all that time.

So, mail must be getting confused when checking. I guess this might not be a growl issue - I'll have to sit and check by disabling growl for a while. If it does turn out to be a growl issue, could it be related to posting growl notifications?

Oh wait, some folks have had this problem before, with or without growlmail.

If you have webmail, check your account and make sure it's not some stuck email.

This thread may have already been resolved, but I just noticed that the poster mentioned he recently added a POP Gmail account. Incidentally, I just added a POP Gmail account and my Apple Mail has been freezing a lot with exactly the same circumstances. I never noticed this before adding Gmail. Could that be the problem maybe?
