Progress Bar Notifications(?)

In a recent experience w/ working with Quicksilver's task viewer, I got to thinking that it might be nice to have an application-independent way of displaying progress. Some alleged benefits of something like this might be:

1. Ability to record durations of tasks (think, 'how long did that download/compilation/etc. really take?' -- also, perhaps particular task durations could be collected for use in guessing/suggesting estimates for task completion)

2. Ability to specify specific sounds (or some other sensory feedback) to indicate completion of tasks

3. Ability to examine a record/log of tasks

Of course, one of the next thoughts that came to mind was whether this might be something Growl might be doing at some point ;-)

Any thoughts on this?

Apologies if this has been suggested before -- I didn't come across anything in my search of the forums.

We've been thinking of something where the app would tell a notification to be sticky, it would stay on screen and then coalesce in such a way that it looks like a bar going across the notification.

I have interest in doing it for applescript...as soon as coalescing gets compiled in. (I was probably going to do it with X's and -'s)
