I really appreciate your looking at this. Also, I do recognize that you need to sleep sometime too.

I can't quite shake the feeling I must have done something head-smackingly stupid to cause it.

No worries.

When you get a chance, look in /Library/Frameworks and see if any frameworks are there that list Growl in their name.

No, none.

I don't even have a Frameworks directory at the ~/Library level, let alone anything in it.

Can I interest you in ~/Library/Mail/Bundles/GrowlMail.mailbundle/Contents/Frameworks/Growl.framework ?

Namely:
    Growl
    Headers
    Resources
    Versions
but I don't imagine any of that is a surprise.

I'm more than halfways tempted to trash the GrowlMail files for now, so I can run Mail again... two days of Entourage has been quite enough thankyou.

Definitely.

We do know GrowlMail works on 10.3 because Macskeeball is on 10.3 and we fixed him up nicely at a panera bread a bit back.

So maybe try removing the mail bundles, relaunching Mail, quitting Mail, reinstalling GrowlMail and Launching Mail.

OK uninstalled and then reinstalled

Postby kng442 » Wed Aug 16, 2006 7:57 am

GrowlMail appears under Applications tab of Growl preferences.
Mail boots successsfully :smt041
Growl tab NOWHERE TO BE FOUND in Mail preferences :/ This is after having fed the terminal your two magic commands.

Console.log says:
2006-08-15 21:34:58.209 Mail[412] Loaded GrowlMail 2.0
2006-08-15 21:34:58.216 GrowlHelperApp[291] 2006-08-15 21:34:58 -0600 GrowlMail registered
2006-08-15 21:34:58.328 GrowlHelperApp[291] 2006-08-15 21:34:58 -0600 Growl: Application re-registered (GrowlMail registered) - Priority 0

I think maybe I'll quit while I'm ahead. I don't have to go back to wretched Entourage, so I'm happy enough.

Thanks for a valiant effort, Tick. I hope you didn't lose any sleep over this.
Kathy

ETA: IT'S WORKING! A mail notification just appeared!!! Still no Growl tab in Mail preferences, but who cares?! It works! :D

Well, worst case, if we continue and mail starts quitting on launch again, removing the growlbundle will fix it.

If you'd like to continue let us know.

One more thing ...

Postby kng442 » Wed Aug 16, 2006 8:16 am

I went wading through System.log -- not that I pretend to know what I'm doing, but sometimes even I can stumble across something interesting -- and I found this (from when Mail was crashing on Sunday):

Aug 13 23:59:05 localhost /Applications/Internet & Email/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail: objc: Both /Users/kathygraves/Library/Mail/Bundles/GrowlMail.mailbundle/Contents/MacOS/GrowlMail and /Library/Mail/Bundles/GrowlMail.mailbundle/Contents/MacOS/GrowlMail have implementations of class GrowlMail.
Aug 13 23:59:05 localhost /Applications/Internet & Email/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail: objc: Using implementation from /Library/Mail/Bundles/GrowlMail.mailbundle/Contents/MacOS/GrowlMail.
Aug 13 23:59:13 localhost crashdump: Started writing crash report to: /Users/kathygraves/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/Mail.crash.log
Aug 13 23:59:15 localhost crashdump: Finished writing crash report to: /Users/kathygraves/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/Mail.crash.log

Is it at all relevant?

You had 2 growlmails installed. That's the problem.

The one in this directory can be deleted (with mail not running):

Code: Select all

/Users/kathygraves/Library/Mail/Bundles

The one here can stay:

Code: Select all

/Library/Mail/Bundles/

Nice try. I did that already. It is not there.

What puzzles me is that I ran the GrowlMail installer only once! I'm not just relying on my memory here; install.log agrees.

The one in this directory can be deleted (with mail not running):

Code: Select all

/Users/kathygraves/Library/Mail/Bundles

It's long gone.

GrowlMail isn't working for me, either. I've tried all the stuff suggested here. Mail doesn't crash, but notifications don't show up, and there's nothing in the Mail preferences. GrowlMail did show up in the Growl preference pane, but then I deleted it to try reinstalling it. Now, even though I ran the installer again, it doesn't show up in the Growl pref pane anymore.

Ideas?

Success on 10.3.9

Postby xander0985 » Sun Sep 03, 2006 8:44 pm

I had the problem with GrowlMail not registering with Growl or showing up in the mail prefs. Quiting and running the two commands in terminal (above) and restarting mail fixed the problem. I know get both Growl allerts and the pref pane appears in mail.

Thanks!
