Having been using Growl for a while without any significant problem, I have problems with notifications not coming up, or coming up after long delays (like 10 minutes and several notifications at once). The activity monitor shows "GrowlHelperApp (Hung)" in red.
In the console, it shows the following:
2006-08-14 10:35:20.800 GrowlTunes[368] Error getting artwork: (null)
2006-08-14 10:35:20.800 GrowlTunes[368] No plug-ins found anything either, or you wouldn't have this message.
and something like:
** (process:394): CRITICAL **: msn_object_new_from_string: assertion `!strncmp(str, "<msnobj ", 8)' failed
** (process:394): CRITICAL **: msn_object_new_from_string: assertion `!strncmp(str, "<msnobj ", 8)' failed
I have no idea if this has anything related to growl.
In addition to standard growl package, I installed growliTunes, Hardware Growler, GrowlMail. Pretty basic actually. I also, for a long time, regularly run daily, weekly and monthly Apple maintenance script and repair permissions. I don't think this should have anything to do with the error.
If I do a fresh reinstall (using uninstall script from the original growl package), would all the settings and downloaded notification styles be removed?
I am using Growl 0.7.4 on my 2004 Powerbook 1,33 GHz with MAC OS X 10.3.9.
Many thanks,

It seems that I am posting question and answer to myself. I found the fix by myself by realising that the growl server was down (growl web couldn't be loaded) whilst my growl stopped working as I ticked the 'check for update' box in growl preferences. After unsuccessful attempts at reinstalling growl, everything worked just fine after unticking the update checkbox.
This might have already been acknowledged to the developers. Otherwise, that would make it a little more comfortable usage experience to fix this before the release of next version.
