Growl only works once

Post by rosshettel »

I've been using Growl for about a month or so now, without any hitches, it's a wonderful app, except just now I've run into a problem. I thought the problem was just with GrowlTunes, but it seems to affect all of Growl. When Growl is started, it will display one notification, but after that notification goes away, no more will appear. This even happens with the preview button. After I restart Growl, the same thing will happen. I am running the latest OS with all the updates on an Intel MacBook. The last change I did to the system was type in a command (can't remember exactly what, found it on the internet) to disable growlTunes menubar. But I think I had the problem before that. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks in advance.

Open up Console (/Applications/Utilities/) and see if there are any growl errors.

I have the same problem. I mainly use Growl for iChat. After someone signs in, and Growl displays it, it shuts off. I have to manually click start every time. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, no luck. Any suggestions, or what kind of error should show in Console?

I think I solved my own problem. If you have the pref app "Stoplight" this causes Growl to stop every time. I just deleted it (I hardly use stoplight anyhow) and with a restart, everything worked as it should.

from lifehacker:
Stoplight will automatically quit a program when the last window is closed. As a long-time Windows user, this is one feature of Macs that has always baffled me. When I close a program, I expect it to stop running (unless it moves down to my system tray, which is a completely different Windows annoyance). Since it doesn't, I find myself wasting time every now and then, going around the horn on my Mac Command-Q'ing everything I'm not using anymore.
This is a Stoplight bug for sure -- it should be ignoring apps with LSUIElement set to True in their info.plist.
The duck still burns.
