I am another newb trying to upload using Cyberduck and failing miserably. here are the particulars.

I am using the free space provided by my ISP to host a website. I have the ftp address, my username and my password. I have downloaded Cyberduck and installed it. I opened a new browser and then clicked "open connection." From there I am asked to put in the server url which I did. Then I am asked to put in my username and password. The port is 21. I noticed that as I am typing my username it is being automatically added to the ftp url which makes the ftp address incorrect (at least according to what my ISP provided.) I pressed connect anyway. Refused. I go back to my ISP...check my information and go through all the steps again...refused. What the heck am I doing wrong? This is my first time trying to upload anything. I am using an iMac Intel running 10.4.8. HELP! Thanking all of you in advance!

Update: I've been scouring these forums and trying the different things listed. I noticed that my server addres contains the http://www.xxx.xxx which is kind of strange. I tried to enter it without the www and that didn't work either. Also, because I am using my ISP to host my site they say I am supposed to use my email address as my user name...seems kind of long...nope...it didn't work either.

Two things:

- It's likely best that you use your full email address as your login name

- It's not wrong that your username is being added to the URL (that is what complete FTP urls look like -- username:password@www.url.com)

Exactly what error message are you getting when you try to connect?

Did you try connecting with each Passive and Active selected on the "Connect Mode" dropdown?

The error I am receiving is
"Network Error" "Connection Failed".

The complete ftp url that is showing looks like this... "ftp://santaclause@northpole.com@www.isp.com:21"

It doesn't have my password....and on top of that it shows two @. Is this even close to correct?

I did try to connect both with the passive and the active.

I went back to my isp and double checked the password...it is correct. I checked the ftp and the login name...all are correct.

Yeah, that URL should work fine (or at least give you a "login failed" message if the username or password is wrong). Since you're getting that error, it means that you're not even connecting to an FTP server.

The part of the URL with your email looks fine (it's ok that it has two @ symbols, and it's ok that it doesn't have your password - Cyberduck sends that separately so people can't see it in the URL).

Did you try:

isp.com
ftp.isp.com

If those don't work, can you post the name of your ISP?

Hi...thanks for all the help..I'm sorry if there is a delay...I'm in Dallas, Texas.

Anyway....I took your suggestion and tried this:

ftp.isp.net

This time I received a "login failed" error. The one with the little keys that shows your email addy and then a blank space for the password. I went back to my isp and double checked the password...I am entering it correctly. Is it a positive sign that I got a login error rather than the previous error?

UPDATE - I GOT IT!

Yeah! I got it to work!

Here is how it played out....

I had to type in this string: ftp-www.isp.net
then my user id; http://www.whetever@isp.net
then my password: xxxxxxxxx

I wasn't typing in the "ftp-" part.

THANKS so much for your help...you really got my brain going on this! I REALLY appreciate it. Now I can upload my homework for my Web 101 class! :D  :)
