What is the number at bottom right of transfer window?

I'm guessing it's either threads or connections, but can someone clarify?

The little number selector box at the bottom right of the transfer window, which defaults to 5, what does it do?

I did search, and consult the help file, but it's not actually a terribly easy thing to search on, and there doesn't seem to be any tooltip type text appear when you hover over it.
