Duplicate GrowlMail notifications

Postby Stern » Thu Jun 12, 2008 9:07 pm

I have a bunch of rules for moving new mail into subfolders and it seems that I will get one notification when the message hits my inbox, and another when it has been moved to its folder. Mail that stays in the inbox get only one notification, The "Only notify for emails in your Inbox" option is unchecked in the preferences. The version of Growl is 1.1.3 on OS X 10.5.3.

Are you using IMAP?

If so, are these subfolders of INBOX?

I'm using IMAP, but the subfolders are not under the inbox. I'm also accessing the account from different locations during the day (though not simultaneously). I've also seen a weird effect where when Mail is started, GrowlMail would give a single notification for all the new mails, then another single notification when the messages were moved by the rules and then would start giving notifications for each individual message with a 10-20 second delay between each notification.

Try this:

1. Open the Bundles folder in the Mail folder in the Library folder in your Home folder.
2. Right-click once on GrowlMail.
3. Click on Get Info.

What version does it show there?

I've got GrowlMail installed for all users, so there's nothing in my library folder. The bundle in /Library doesn't show any version in the infos, but the plist says the version is 1.1.3.

I'm using the Mail app with Gmail through IMAP and I notice two annoying issues with growl:
1) Duplicate notifications for messages that go in the inbox, this is because all incoming messages go both in the inbox as well as the "All Mail" folder.
2) Gmail insists upon syncing the spam folder with Mail but Mail doesn't recognize these messages as spam and I get a growl notification with every spam message.
Both these issues would be fixed if I could specify that notification only happens for incoming messages in the inbox itself.

I also have this problem. I use smart mail boxes. And for each mail box, I get a notification. Also, when I click on the notifications, only one will actually bring up the email. The others bring up blank mail message.

Has anyone found a solution for this yet?

I've had a couple nasty spam messages pop up while someone was watching my screen and it was a bit embarassing.

A problem that I find annoying is that a notification will be shown for all mail that enters the inbox, even if it was already read on another computer (I used an IMAP account and have it configured at home and work). As such, when I get home in the evening, I see a notification for all the emails that I read during the day.

We have fixed this. At some point, we'll merge it in for 1.1.5.

I have Growl 1.1.5 installed and see duplicate notifications with GrowlMail + IMAP + MailTags. But I am quite sure this happens only because of the MailTags Plug-In. I defined rules which assign tags to certain incoming messages. Every time MailTags changes a messages I see the message disappear and then reappear again. I guess MailTags saves a new version of the message on the folder and deletes the old one. Do you see any chance of not showing notifications for these tagged messages, at least not for the incoming ones being tagged by rules? It's quite annoying to see two notifications for most incoming messages.

The MailTags developers would have to send us a patch.
