Request: Media Search Window

Postby djmori » Sun Oct 09, 2005 2:47 pm

Hi everyone!!!
I have seen that apps like Automator, Pages and Keynote bring a Media search windows like this:

Image

It think it would be a usefull add-on to adium (for file transfers). In the case of iphoto, one usually has to open the entire app to search for a single photo one wants to send. (Couse de folders inside the Iphoto library makes no sense for me)
What do yo guys think? Could it be done?[/img]

Please see http://trac.adiumx.com/wiki/RequestingFeatures to file requests.

My feedback is that I have grown to hate iPhoto, so it's useless to me. (Cause de folders inside the Iphoto library are full of redundant crap)

It might work… but seems like way to much work. I don’t think iChat has this… and this would ignore all other Movie/Picture/Audio apps.

It would be nice, if you can add your own folders and stuff.
(maybe you alredy can?)

That's a nice idea.

Apple haven't made the media browser available to the public to use. While it's a good idea, a lot of time would be spent reverse engineering this functionality, which could be better invested in something else.

Just cross your fingers and hope Apple make the iLife Media Browser available for 3rd party developers in Leopard :-)

pft! Adium uses Apple’s “private” image picker used in iChat and others.

Colloquy uses the same color picker. I'm sure its just using the system's ability to do this, and not reverse engineering (which would break licenses of all of your Apple applications). Its probably a class like NSColorPickerAndStuff.

No the image picker is private, not the colour picker.

Didn't know it was private...

Still.. I have an idea:
In automator, when Iphoto is installed theres an "ask for photos" action that displays a similar pop-up.

Image

Maybe someone could develop somekind of automator "send to adium" action. In that way, if will only take to make an automator workflow (ask for photos, send to adium) to have this working. (in fact, a button in he message window toolbar, could be made to run it.
It could be a smart way to solve the problem don't you thing?

It works well - Chris and I use it in Family.

Indeed, it's pretty slick. I think there's a screenshot of it in action here: http://www.saltatory.com/familyabout.html

Maybe. :)

Can you get a mockup together of where you'd like us to have buttons to launch that window?

sure... I was thinking in a "send media" button next to the "send file" one.
This is really important, as you can't browse the iphoto library using the regular send file window.

I don't think this is needed anymore, as in Leopard, the media browser is integrated into every Open/Save dialog.

iLife Media Browser in Open Panel
Access iLife content from any Mac OS X application. Now the iLife Media Browser is integrated into the Open panel.

Let's just wait for 10.5 on that thing then, less stuff for us to maintain. :D
