Mainly because that is the standard. If you type something in the google box in safari, the X shows up on the right side.

I agree with this, two small buttons on the right side of a message that otherwise looks the same are likely to be overlooked by an average user.

Then again, a tall "sheet" attached to each "send later" message would be awkward if more than one or two messages were queued up. There's got to be some kind of a middle ground, perhaps the "explanation sheet" appearing underneath the block of "send later" messages.

My powerbook is having problems charging, so I don't really have access to photoshop right now to make a mockup, but everyone is familiar with the way that Adium groups messages sent by the same user within a certain time window (at least with the majority of message styles), perhaps have the explanation and buttons appear at the top or bottom of that block of messages, clicking "force send now" would force send all of the messages in the block (which I assume would be what most people would want) and clicking the "cancel" button would cancel them all?

That might be canceling a lot of messages, though...

Just thinking out loud...

Granted it does the same thing, but right now if I have three messages queued up to be sent, the only way to delete one of them is by going into the events menu, finding that message and deleting it, which is much less convenient than having the messages shown in the chat area, Also, if I have a message in the queue and I forget about it, there is no indication that it is even there

Here's another idea, we can have a box come up like it does now whenever you send a message that explains what the two buttons do, with a little "don't show this message again" checkbox.

I'm pretty happy with how the do-you-want-to-send-later stuff is handled right now; the sheet with an explanation shouldn't go away. *After* marking a message as send-me-later, displaying it in a way something like shown here would be great.
The duck still burns.

On this subject, I have noticed that when I force send a message to someone who appears offline, if they really are offline I am stuck force sending messages to them, meaning I don't get the option to send a message later. Is this intentional, or could it be changed?

Another good point. It would be convenient if the "The previous message could not be sent because <screen name> is not available" message could have a small button, like those in the mockups here, that queued the message up for "send later."
