We've been rather concerned about this causing issues for people more than solving problems. What issue does this address for you?

Let you try to explain the problem in more details.
In most cases my friend put their respective emotions as emoticons for the day. So say if they are sad they would have
or something etc in their name. ( This isn't a very good example since you could easily guess what
means. ) Another example is my friend would put up the beer icon if they are having party right now

I like the MSN style to show up default emoticons as a way to show to other friend what they are up to or doing.
It Might be a problem if all emoticons are shown up like this.
Example would be if i have a custom emoticons where it would replace the letter "e" or "t" or any other letters, the contract list would obviously get very messy.
So i think it would be wise to only include the default MSN emoticons set in.
And since adium is a muti protocol client, may be it is a better idea to show the emoticons for the respective protocol. Although i am not sure if any other IM network have this features ( emoticons in contract list ) available in their official client.
And this bring us to the first suggestion as to why we need a complete default MSN icons set built in instead of using add on. Obviously if we dont have the full MSN icons set some emoticons on contract list would still be shown as their letters.
