Contact's not showing after being added

I just got Adium and I'm trying to enter my contacts manually. I haven't had an IM client for a while so I don't have buddy list to import. When I click add nothing shows up on my contact list. However, if I enter an invalid sn, for example jon@yahoo.com, rather than simply jon it informs that it cannot add jon@yahoo.com. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I think by default adium hides offline contacts. Try view -> Show Offline contacts.
