The MSN-Yahoo bridge is not currently supported; you'd need to add a Yahoo account in the Account Preferences.

Adium does its best to treat all the lists as one combined one.

But does not actually add them to your MSN buddy list as the official clients can (for cross-network communication [Yahoo <-> MSN].)

Because you need to use a yahoo account to message a yahoo person.

Yahoo! and Microsoft made a deal to have msn and yahoo talk to each other. However, this requires updating the protocol. We don't have those updates in Adium, and do not have an eta on when they will be added.

To make sure I understand.... I have a .Mac/AIM account. I decided to switch to Adium in order to be able to connect to YIM users as well. But if I read this thread right, there's no way I can do that without first creating a YIM account for myself as well?

That's correct. To reach Yahoo users, you need a Yahoo account first. Same with MSN, same with GTalk.

There is a way to configure iChat to talk to Yahoo users via Jabber. Below is a link to the description. Note at the time of this writing, the Allforces server seemed to be down (at least for me) so u may have to check back later to get the detailed instructions.

Since that approach uses a Jabber server, it MAY be possible to also use Adium to patch through the Jabber server. However, I have not tried it nor do I plan to.
I merely offer is an alternative until the Cross-service support filters into Adium someday.

Thanks for the tips drmoque. I'll probably go ahead and register a YIM acct, since it sounds like the easiest path, but cool to know there is the possiblity of bridging the great divide.
