contact list with one click on the status icon

How do I open my Adium contact list by clicking once on the status icon?

Shouldn't that be the default action for clicking on the status symbol?

No, this should not be the default behavior. Clicking the status menu item should show the menu, it's not a button and no status items behave in such a manner.

Personally I have mine auto-hide on the screen edge.

If I want to quickly hide and unhide my list, I hit Command-/

closes just the contact list, using the key command when the window is gone brings it back up. Only drawback is that it only works if Adium is in the front...
