The Applescript which aperantos mentioned working on earlier in the thread would allow just that (well, /name{My name}, but same difference).
The duck still burns.

A coincidence you should say that!

As well as making it changeable via shell scripts, I was thinking of having a go at adding a "/nick" option. Personally I would rather that than having the interface cluttered with lesser used features.

Though what I suppose would be nice is if you could have an [optional] button on the toolbar to bring up the Personal tab of the preferences of account being used in that message window. That way it would be just one click to be able to change display names for those who would prefer that approach.

I made the applescript that changed the display name easily, but I guess I can only test it in the next beta...

I'm also trying to figure out if AppleScript can show the open file dialog, as to change the display image.

The only problem left, would be to make this script on a per-account basis. I'll be looking into that too, though I don't have any hopes it's possible (I'm an AppleScript illiterate, but I'm slowly progressing)

It would be a brilliant idea, that interface makers can add buttons to scripts.
So it's depending of what contact list you use if you can see this.
And to continue on this idea, it would be nice that the designer could add an input box to pass values to the script. (thus making it possible to change name)
