No, just makes it easier to negotiate a connection, and you might have a higher success rate, but once it starts it should be the same regardless of the port it's on.

How can I open these ports if I'm using my AirPort as a router? I tried the port forwarding in the Admin Util, but you can't specify a range of ports. Do I just have to do them one by one, or is there an easier way? Sorry for the newbie question

Click the "New..." button in the firewall preferences, and just enter it in as , 5190-5200, it will accept them as a series, and open all those ports.

Well, I had thought about trying that previously, but the firewall isn't even turned on. So theoretically aren't ALL the ports open?

Yeah okay so...in the 0.77 Public Release it simply tells me the person wants to send a file. In the 0.80 svn version, it at least goes to the File Transfer window (and does nothing). I tried this with the firewall on AND off, with the ports open. So uh...does anyone else have any suggestions?

While your Mac's firewall may be off, if you use Airport, or any kind of router, firewall is on by default.

I'm not sure if you can turn off Airport's firewall.

if your airport is set up to "distribute ip addresses" then you are behind a firewall, I don't know of a way to turn the firewall off with this setting on. As for port forwarding... no clue how to make that work.

I've found that it's not possible to specify port ranges on airport extreme base stations. So you're only option is to either

-- Put in all of the ports one by one.

-- Or use the "default host" option to put your mac into the dmz so that the router doesn't offer any protection. (If you do that be sure to turn the firewall on on your laptop)

How is it that file-transferring with iChat 'just works'? Is this a consequence of using the 'real' AIM protocol vs. the public AIM protocol that gAIM uses?

When using iChat, everything is fine. When using Adium, file transfers don't get past the invitation. [And no, I haven't touched network/router/firewall settings.]

Dude, Gaim or gaim not GAIM or gAIM.

Anyways, Gaim uses OSCAR now, the 'real' AIM protocol, not TOC, the public one.

EDIT: Also, TOC doesn't have file transfer

Well, I tried "mapping" every port individually to my private IP in the Airport Admin Utility and still no go in .77 or .80...same problems. Thanks for the suggestions though
