Menubar Icon Xtras

Post by djbsquared »

A while ago Adium added the EMD to your menu bar. Recently people realized it was replaceable and various random xtras started popping up. These xtras were never officially supported, and with the new badging in 1.0 has caused many of them to act differently than intended by their authors. I have good news, in 1.1 we will officially support user created menubar xtras, however until then we have decided to disable these xtras in order to provide the highest quality xtras and ease of use to both our users and creators. Thank you for understanding our predicament and continuing to use Adium.

Excellent! I used a custom EMD in Adium before the 1.0 releases, and realized that 1.0 caused them to not display as they should. I'm glad to hear that custom EMDs will be making a return in 1.1!

I'm glad to know they're going to be officially supported. :)

I applaud the move to officially support menubar icons in 1.1, but can you elaborate on why the very simple hack of changing a couple of .png images in the package resources is problematic at the moment?

I guess I'll have to make my own, because I miss the little smiley faces that now seem to have been deleted from the xtras site

Because people can't be trusted ;) We don't want to have anything on official Adium sites advising folks to burrow into the application package to make changes -- there's too much opportunity for odd problems to occur as a result of folks deleting the wrong files, modifying things they shouldn't, etc., and that only adds to our support burden.

1.0 adds a status badge overlay over the icon, which can distort or otherwise ruin what the menubar extra author intended pre-1.0.

A lot of them no longer worked as intended. Some of them had .app installers which we could not trust to be allowed to be distributed.

Ahh cool... thanks for clarifying.

I'm going to mess around for myself anyway and look forward to submitting something to xtras when it's official, although Leopard will most likely render my design obsolete ;)

I made a 'graphite' Tiger themed menubar set tonight (see above cavaets above compatibility with Adium 1):

You've inadvertently encouraged me to get involved.

Adium rocks... keep up the brilliant dev work guys.

This was not really an invitation for discussion, just letting you know what happened and why. Thanks for using adium and we will be glad to see all the resubmitted xtras with 1.1.
