It really sounds like a problem with the statuses you have saved for that user. Is there any reason you can't toss them, or the entire Adium profile in that user's account, and start from scratch if you've found that it does work in such an environment? (by toss I mean set aside, not necessarily delete) It's a bit tedious, but would likely be the path of least resistance.

I've deleted my own status comments, I've deleted Adium and the folder Adium 2.0 and reinstalled Adium. Even in in it's pristine and virgin state changing Status, using the ones supplied, still causes the problem. If, however, there is a stray file somewhere in an unexpected location of which I am unaware, which of course I won't have deleted, then maybe that holds some corruption that is causing the problem but I can't find any likely candidate(s).

I have no known haxies implemented although I do run "Folding@Home" 24/7. and in my StartUp files I have Macaroni, LittleSnitch, WeatherDock, Growl, Intego's NetUpdateX4, VirusBarrierX4 and PersonalBackupX4, SurplusMeter, SKYPE, DiskWarrior, ChronoSync and, of course, Adium.

I have "Safe Booted" from the password / User prompt which, of course, disables all my log-in items and the problem still recurred so it doesn't look as if it is any of those - but I'm open to persuasion.

If I click on the Status change menu on the top of the Contacts panel it switches to "off-line" before going to the newly selected Status (I'd expect it to go direct and seemlessly) - or, if I haven't selected a new status but merely clicked the button as if I'm going to change it but haven't done so, it goes offlibe before going back to the original status.

It is during this process that the menus go all odd (see pictures earlier in the thread) and duplications occur.

As I said before, I've done a clean archive and install of OSX.4 and run the combo updater to X.4.9, I've run the full suite of OnyX and Macaroni, I've repaired permissions, run fsck -fy, run applejack AUTO (deep clean) and I've kicked the neighbour's cat - all to no avail.

I'd love to get this sorted, partly for the intelectual challenge (as a sometime COBOL and ICL VME programmer I love a logic problem) and partly becuase i think, this problem aside, that Adium is just what I'm looking for.

Although you said you've redone the system I'm curious if any items may be left over (I'm just exploring avenues here.)

From the earlier crash report it appears that Application Enhancer was running, as well as some Input Managers, which would be the first items to ensure are disabled (as they are code injection mechanisms and Safe Boot may not be suppressing them.)

Look in /Library/Application Enhancers/, ~/Library/Application Enhancers/, /Library/InputManagers/ and ~/Library/InputManagers/

OK, bgannin, I'm game to see this through to the bitter end if you are prepared to hold my hand! Even though I can crack dumps on IBM and Honeywell BULL mainframes in my sleep, and even debug COBOL whilst riding a unicycle, I'm not too clued up on how OSX works - in fact my experience of OSX has not been good (I had System 7.1b on a PowerBook 165 without any trouble for ten years or so, yet OSX has been a series of pains in the fundament - see specifically http://forums.dealmac.com/read.php?1,17 ... 45#1760945 if you like horror stories  ) and I am not amongst those who consider it the greatest thing since sliced bread.

But I'll soldier on if your patience, and that of your Adium colleagues, can stand it.

I have now uninstalled Application Enhancer, which to be frank I thought I had done previously. It made no difference except that Adium now crashes each time I try top change status rather than just "goes funny".

I have followed the paths you suggested and have found, but as yet done nothing about, the following:

/Library/Application Enhancers/Instant Hijack Server.ape - which contains sub-folders. I use Instant Hijack as a part of the AudioHijack Pro application as I record a fair bit of radio - Instant Hijack is an add-on to AHPro which means you can hijack a live stream without having to relaunch the browser after opening AHPro.

~/Library/Application Enhancers/ - no such path

/Library/InputManagers/Smart Crash Reports - which, if memory serves, allows crash reports to be sent to both Apple (as normal under OSX) and toe the application authors. You may have seen a few from me!

~/Library/InputManagers/Chax - which I used when I used iChat as my IM application.

Now, so as not to make the situation more complex (I'd rather do things slowly so that if there is a change in Adium's behaviour I at least know which step caused the change) I've done nothing with those files/folders yet. I'd be happy to uninstall any or all of them if you think that would help, but maybe you can identify which of them is the most likely culprit, assuming that any of them are?

A further observation as to what is happening is that, when originally launched, Adium shows, under File, a series of Disconnect commands, one for each of the five IM system I use. Fair enough, that's what I'd expect. But, when I have tried to change Status, that changed to five Connects f and five Disconnects, almost as if it was 'reading" each account twice and was unsure of it's status. I can't actually reproduce that now because, since uninstalling Application Enhancer, Adium crashes each time I try to change status :???: !

I do hope that you can help me bottom this out - I like Adium (really I do, I'm not trying to flatter you into helping - well, not much anyway  )and would prefer to stay with it if I can get it to do what it should.

Could you post the stack trace portion for the thread that crashed please? If it's not in the run loop it might be helpful.

I'm not sure I know what you mean or where to look, but I've copied the following from Console > /var/log/crashreporter.log for today's entries. I've also found a series of Adium Crashlogs in Trash and the latest of these is attached further down this post. I've put a :x symbol so you can find the start easily.

If that isn't what you mean, can you point me in the right direction? if what you want isn't available, I'm quite happy to keep launching Adium and crashing it by changing status to create whatever log you need.

My apologies for posting the whole shooting match but, as I said, I'm easily confused by OSX!

I've added my AIM name to my profile, bgannin, in case you wanted to chat live rather than through a series of posts where I'm probably wasting your time by posting masses of irrelevant logs. I'm around and about for a while so should be available although i cant't change my status to show when I am here!

Actually, forum threads are preferable in most instances, or trac tickets.

My intent in debugging this is to remove anything that's not from Adium or Apple from the crash report so we can isolate it to Adium (and not an unexpected interaction)

So next up would be to move the InputManagers and whatnot (SCR, Chax, AHP and its parts) so they no longer load. Recreate the crash without them and we'll see what the crash log is like.

After that we can move on to other loaded items such as contextual menu items (as found in ~/Library/Contextual Menu Items/)

OK, bgannin, you're the boss!

I shall first uninstall each of those items where there is an uninstall option. If there isn't one, I'll Spotlight for any occurences and drag any hits to the Trash although I won't delete them at that time.

Or would you just recommend dragging the items in the paths I quoted earlier to the trash? I'm not sure that this latter method would actually get rid of everything required, but I'm open suggestion. I seem to recall that in System 7.1b (of beloved memory) there was some free/share/whateverware that identified files connected with specific apps no matter where they had been dumped by installers - maybe you know of an OSX.4.9 one that would help me ensure that I really had done a clean sweep?

If Adium still misbehaves, I'll keep changing status, etc until I get a crash and I'll then post the crash logs on this topic. I gues that the report would be the OSX Apple one as the Smart Crash Reporter which also allowed me to send them to you will be uninstalled by then as it came, i think, as an add-on to Audio HiJack pro.

If Adium doesn't misbehave, then I'll introduce each one back in turn and "test to destruction", starting with the ones I find most useful. Again, when Adium crashes, or the menus go all duplicated again, I'll post details on here.

I'm presuming, here, that in the case of AudioHiJack Pro, see de atils at (http://www.rogueamoeba.com/audiohijackpro/) you want the add-ons/extras uninstalling, not the application itself?

I may have to do this over a period of the next few days, if you can bear with me, as I'm actually a full time Carer for my disabled wife and we have a few days of medical appointments to get through which will reduce my on-line time for a bit.

But I shall persevere and report back as and when anything happens or I can identify some "cause and effect".

Thanks for your continued interest and patience.

Sorry, The_Tic, I'm not sure just what you mean. If you mean that miles of geekish gobbledegook posted in a thread is the best way to show things then fine by me - although I don't know what a trac ticket is.

I was just mindful that there is an option in MacFixIt, I think, which allows massive system logs to be hidden with a sort of "spoiler" or "hidden" button but I can't find one on this forum. If there were one, I could use it and save space.

Thanks for the comment and, if you think that you could rephrase it for my less educated brain Then I'd be delighted to "use" the advice.

Thanks to all who are taknig an interest in my plight!

Trac tickets are tickets filed in our issue tracking system, http://trac.adiumx.com/

Moving the items to the Trash and logging out and then back in should be enough to stop their running, though in some cases you may need to restart entirely. You don't have to remove them permanently, only for testing :)

Right, so far I have:

Step 1 – uninstalled the extras SoundFlower, Schedule heper and Smart Crash Reports from Audio HiJack Pro v2.7.1 using AHP's own internal uninstall routines. Instant HiJack, another AHP extra, didn't seem to have been installed although I'm sure that I did install it once.

Restart, kernel panic
Restart, kernel panic
Restart, single user mode, hangs
Restart, single user mode, fsck –fy - hangs
Restart, single user mode, fsck –fy - “panic, we’re hanging here”
Restart, single user mode, fsck –fy - no errors found, exit, OSX loads OK

Repaired permissions via Disk Utility - several were repaired.

Adium still misbehaves and produces duplicated menu items, but does not crash.

Reboot

Step 2 – drag items from folders to Trash, as suggested further up this thread

/Library/Application Enhancers/Instant Hijack Server.ape
/Library/InputManagers/Smart Crash Reports
~/Library/InputManagers/Chax

Note, ~/Library/Application Enhancers/ - no such path

Repaired permissions via Disk Utility - several were again repaired.

Adium still misbehaves and produces duplicated menu items, but does not crash.

Find convenient wall and bang my head against it.

Post this and await further advice!

I shall continue to abuse Adium in the hope of causing a crash again so that I can create another Crash Log for you - unless there is some way of producing something that might help you identify the "rogue" clash of applications?

Or maybe there is a Console/System log wich I could copy for you? I can carry out "some specific step" for you at a specific and known time so that I only need to copy that portion of whatever log might help you - just say what and where.

Some additional information of "Menu" and "Preference" behaviour is as follows:

When Adium is first launched and before I have manually changed status, the File menu contains, inter alia, the following entries:

Disconnect: my GoogleTalk ID
Disconnect: my AIM ID
Disconnect: my ICQ ID
Disconnect: my Yahoo ID
Disconnect: my MSN ID

and Preferences > Accounts lists all five accounts each being on-line.

After I have manually changed status, the File menu includes:

Connect: my GoogleTalk ID
Connect: my AIM ID
Connect: my ICQ ID
Connect: my Yahoo ID
Connect: my MSN ID
Cancel: my GoogleTalk ID
Cancel: my AIM ID
Cancel: my ICQ ID
Cancel: my Yahoo ID
Disconnect: my MSN ID

These entries on the file menu become duplicated: New chat, Join group chat (greyed out), Connect a guest account and Import

and Close, Close Chat (greyed out), Close all chats (greyed out), Save As (greyed out), Page set up and Print are all shown only once.

Preferences > Accounts then shows

My GoogleTalk ID as Connecting
My AIM ID as Connecting
My ICQ ID as Connecting
My Yahoo ID as Connecting
My MSN ID as Online

and there they stay ad infinitum.

I just thought I'd try and confuse you!

Do you get the same doubling behavior on a separate user account (step 4 of the troubleshooting steps listed in TroubleshootingTips)?
The duck still burns.

No, I've tried that before (see Posted: Mon Mar 19, 2007 7:13 pm) and i've just tried again now in a clean, new user.

That seems to work OK so it does appear to be user specific.

Well, neither Adium nor anything else have crashed since the above, but Adium is still exhibiting the "double menu" effect after manually changing status.

I'm at a loss as to how I can provide more useful evidence to you experts to help me resolve this irritating little problem.

It does appear as if it is something in my user, but how to isolate it? I have no idea.

Edit: Just another possible clue, although it doesn't help me one little bit. I said earlier that as well as manually changing Status, adding a smiley via the menu in a chat also starts the duplication - well, I just sent a message and typed the smiley symbols i.e. : - ) ) with no spaces) and it produced a pictorial smiley in the chat without causing the menu duplications. Does that help anyone, or merely confuse even further?

As I said further up ...
... in fact my experience of OSX has not been good (I had System 7.1b on a PowerBook 165 without any trouble for ten years or so, yet OSX has been a series of pains in the fundament - see specifically http://forums.dealmac.com/read.php?1,17 ... 45#1760945 if you like horror stories ) and I am not amongst those who consider it the greatest thing since sliced bread.
A better link to it all is http://forums.dealmac.com/read.php?1,1758326,page=1, but don't blame me if you have nightmares.

Now, any further suggestions one and all?
