Hi,
first of all thank you for devleoping this great messenger.
I would like to express my wish to be able to connect to IRC channels with the Adium client. I think Adium has great and has lots of potential. IRC support is the only support that is missing, in my opinion.
Keep up the great work.
IRC Support Request
"We're blocking irc support on better group chat support."
Could you perhaps give a bit more detail? I'm sorry, I'm simply unable to parse this statement. I've done a quick search of the roadmap, and the Adium site; and this statement is the most I've seen that directly addresses IRC and Adium.
The only reason I can't use Adium is lack of IRC support- and the only multi-protocol chat client for the Mac that does support IRC is Fire. And Fire has ceased development.
Yes, I could always load X and run Gaim; but currently that would be the *only* reason to run X, and that's an awful lot of overhead for just the ability to chat.
Granted, I'm not a typical IRC user- I have a set of friends that I've met IRL; and most of us keep tabs via a private server.
So- please... will Adium support IRC? And if not, why?
Thank you!!

Adium will support IRC most likely, but it won't be in the official build in the immediate future because we don't feel that Adium's group chat support is well developed enough yet to make it a worthy IRC client.
You can add IRC support via a plugin, actually, as of Adium 1.x. It's unsupported and almost certainly will break with each release of Adium as we don't have a decent versioning or upgrade scheme for plugins yet. When Adium starts crashing on launch at some point in the future, remove IRC Service.AdiumLibgaimPlugin from ~/Library/Application Support/Adium 2.0/Plugins.
Download it here. Double click to install. This will *not* work in 1.0.2b4 but will *probably* work in 1.0.1, *definitely* work in 1.0.2 (coming soon), and *may* work in future versions.

Re: IRC Support Request
Any word on IRC support?
I've seen it claimed on the Adium Wiki that "IRC and instant messenging are very different paradigms", and I reject that dogma entirely. Using Colloquy doesn't turn out to be significantly different for me from using Adium ... except that I now have to keep two chat programs open (and one of my reasons for using Adium in first place is so that I don't have to do this). And, I come from an "old school" chat program background (ICB, not IRC ... I laughed when I saw that Colloquy actually supports ICB), so my statement of the similarities between them is not just at the higher level/user interface level. The only difference, really, is that in IRC or ICB you can list everyone and every group if you want (if you can stand to see that list fly by), but most modern IM systems don't allow that. (the other difference, specific to ICB, is that ICB only allows you to be in one group chat/channel at a time, and requires that you be in a group chat/channel)
Regardless of whether or not the Adium devs prefer to use 1 chat program or two, I would appreciate it if they would enable/incorporate libpurple's IRC support. Even if it's just for 1-on-1 IMs/PMs and not for group chats (ie. sign the user on with no channel subscriptions, and just have them available for private messages).

It's in the 1.4 beta which is around for some time now, by the way.
