There are many different kinds of Xtras out there, and many prefs to set, and many new users prefer not to tackle all of that, and some just can't fins the right fit, a thing that can be quite a bit of work.
A good solution to this would be Xtras packs or skins. A collection of Xtras, and predefined fonts, colours, sizes, general prefs and even events that can just be downloaded and installed.
The way I see it, there are 2 way in which this can be implemented:
1. Having .adiumxtraspack files that contain all of the xtras and a .plist listing them all, as well as the preferences to be set.
2. Having .adiumxtraspack files that just contain a .plist, and having the website (or even Adium itself) download the missing/all of the Xtras.
To keep the level of Xtras packs high, and the number not to huge, you can limit users to only use their own Xtras in their packs.
These can turn out to be pretty fun and efficient.
